A ski-patroller (first aid person) rushes to the scene. Of course, in this case it just so happens that the racer speaks only Cana- dian French and the ski- patroller only Canadian English. The patroller needs some vital informa- tion from the racer to determine how to handle the case. Well, if you have not guessed it already, this is where bilingual service come into the picture. The second group of bilingual duties involve in- formation services. All bilingual people also act as information officers. They must have available in both English and French detail- ed information concerning all sports events and associated activities. They must know where and from whom the athletes can ob- tain professional and technical assistance. 'If, for instance, a racer breaks a ski, the bilingual person can tell him who the supply officer is, where he is, and how to get in touch with him. If an athlete misses his bus to the ski area, the bilingual person will in- form him of alternate ways to get to the hill. Or, bilingual people will offer services at a more per- sonal level by telling Michelle where to find a present for her mother or by helping Pierre phone home to tell he won the giant slalom. Thirdly, the presence of bilingual people at all ski events and functions per- taining to these events will be a way of showing our Western hospitality (the theme that won Southern Alberta the Winter It will prove that we acknowledge and respect the fact that some of the young athletes, though Canadians, come from a cultural background different from ours and speak a different language. Information on Pincher Creek, the surrounding area, and on Alberta will be included in a bilingual booklet presented to the athletes as a souvenir of their stay here. Hopefully, this gesture will make French Cana- dian skiers feel more welcome and add to the welcome planned for all athletes. Many bilingual volunteers are needed to act as skiing officials. If you are bilingual, know a bit about skiing, and can donate an afternoon or evening or maybe even a day or two of your time, please contact Birthe Perry, 3454176.
