Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 10, 1975, Lethbridge, Alberta 10 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Monday, February 10, 1975 Largest phone hook-up ever attempted in Alberta AGT provides communications system DARK RUM WHITE RUM Stable in Quality, Popularity and Price Alberta Government Telephones has supplied technical advisors and work crews to co-ordinate the largest com- munications venture in Alberta for a single event, said Lloyd Muir, Calgary Business Communications Sale Manager. Over the past few months AGT has installed communications equip- ment and facilities for the Lethbridge and District Southern Alberta Winter Games, February 11-23, 1975. In Lethbridge a switchboard was installed in the Canada Winter Games headquarters at 1804 3rd Avenue South giv- ing the headquarters the ability to communicate with Lethbridge city and 16 district venues. Chris Burgess, Lethbridge AGT Service Advisor trained volunteers in the Winter Games head- quarters to operate switchboards at Lethbridge and Westcastle during the games. AGT has buried a 25 pair cable along a 28 mile route from Pincher Creek to the West Castle Ski Resort where a private switchboard is to be in- stalled. A 100 pair cable has also been buried in Pincher Creek to service the Athletes Ski Village located in Canyon School. AGT engineers also design- ed additional line circuitry between the Lethbridge Winter Games head- quarters and Pincher Creek. AGT also installed a total of 53 local telephone lines, 100 pay phones and 44 radio broadcast circuits in the Lethbridge and district venues. The district venues in Claresholm, Picture Butte, Raymond, Fort Macleod, Pincher Creek, Taber, Standoff, Bow Island, Coleman, Cardston, Magrath and the West Cas- tle Ski each received two local telephone lines, two pay phones and two radio broadcast circuits. Radio broadcast circuits will be available in the event local radio stations or national networks wish to utlize the facilities. The venues in Lethbridge including the Stan Siwik Family Pool, Civic Sports Centre, Winston Churchill High Jr. High School, Yates Memorial Centre, Lethbridge and District Exhibition Pavilion Building have three local telephone lines and two radio broadcast circuits in- stalled with the exception of the University which received four local lines, two pay phones were in- stalled in the Stan Siwik Pool, Civic Sports Centre, University of Lethbridge and Wilson Jr. High School. Fifteen telephones work- ing through the Games headquarters switchboard are directly connected to the games result centre and the newsmedia room located in the El Rancho Motor Hotel. Individual line service and 12 public pay phones were installed in the two areas. Special rotary circuits were installed by AGT to receive games results from venues where the games are being staged. The Games results are then sent from the News- media Room to Xerox machines in The Lethbridge Herald and CBC Production Centre. The newly completed Lethbridge Canada Games Sportsplex has a push button telephone system installed along with public' pay phones, radio broad- cast circuits and lines for local telephones. AGT installed telephone facilities in the Athletes Villages at the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute and Pincher Creek Canyon School during the Christ- mas holiday period. During the same period volunteers trained to operate mobile radio equipment. Five mobile radio systems have been provid- ed for athletic events, tran- sportation, parking, management and security personnel. AGT is also supplying facilities for radio and television broadcasting. A special Winter Games Telephone Directory for Athletes and Games per- sonnel has been produced for the games by AGT. Bus stop The buses will stop only at venue sites, or the athlete's village, so passengers may board or depart at these locations only.
