To familiarize Canadians with the environment of major competitions. 0 To strengthen mutual understanding and friendship among athletes from different areas in Canada and to encourage national unity through sport. 0 To increase interest and participation in those sports presently in a stage of develop- ment in some areas of Canada. To permit a maximum number of Canadian athletes to participate in high calibre competition. To illustrate that progress is being made in the development of amateur sport at all levels of competition. 9 To allow for a periodic evaluation of the progress being made in the development of amateur sport and to better an appraisal of the training methods being used by Canadian athletes. 0 To foster in Canadian athletes the incentive to improve and develop a sense of national pride. t To encourage the development of team spirit and a sense of fairness and good judgement in competition. To demonstrate through a high level of athletic accomplishment the benefits that can be derived from vigorous physical training and self discipline. ;
