ALBERTA F25 Transplant operation performed MONTREAL (CP) Three children, aged 2V2 to 7, were in "fair condition" in the intensive care unit of Notre Dame Hospital Friday following the second triple transplant operation in Canadian medical history. Dr. Pierre Daloze, a pioneer in liver transplants, and his 17-man surgical team were in the operating room for 18 hours, from 6 p.m. Wednesday until .noon Thursday performing a liver transplant on a 2Vi-year-old boy and two kidney iransplants on 5 and 7. A four-year-old boy killed in a car accident earlier in the week was the donor of all three organs. Dr.. Daloze said the liver transplant could help Louis Lalonde, suffering from Niemann Pick disease, live another five years. The disease was preventing his liver from producing enough enzymes and without the operation he would have died within a year, the doctor said. Even if the transplant is ac- cepted by the boy's body, doc- tors are uncertain that the dis- ease will be cured. The two older children were suffering from a congenital kidney disease which required them to undergo kidney dialysis at least three times a week, five to six hours at a time. It severely restricted their diet and activity, he said, but the operation should allow them to lead near-normal lives.
