At dusk, herds leave the water where they spend up to tliirteen hours a day, to feed on grass. Although peaceful grazers, the hippos have sword-like canine teeth which Cousteau learns are employed for fighting among themselves as well as for attacking such predators as the crocodile - and man. Disadvantaged by the size of the lake in which the hippo proves elusive, and by turbid water conditions, the diver-researchers construct a life size plastic hippo nicknamed Loli-ta to infiltrate the herd. Lolita, with an aperture in her Vuth for a camera, bring disappointing results. In an effort to improve filming conditions the expedition moves 1,500 miles inland to the Luangwa Valley where they have located hippos in clear water pools. Mating fever is spreading through the herd, making the males ill tempered and violent. An attempt to film from an unmanned raft fails when a bull gees beserk and demolishes it, forcing the eamerman into an extremely dangerous dive with the hippos and their even more dangerous pool - mates, carnivorous crocodiles. Hippos spend up to 13 hours each day in the water. This enables them to protect their delicate skins and take their huge weight off their limbs. Although the hippos spend most cf their day in the Wfer, they can remain submerged for only five minutes at a time - frequently surfacing to take in more oxygen. "Hippo!" was written and produced by Andy White and narrated by Bod Serling.
