Since prehistoric times, he has marvelled at prenatal life, and while modern medical science has been able to "unveil" the age-old secret of life in the womb, there is much about it J we do not yet understand. Today, an important question remains: When does human lite begin. A major issue in the current Abortion debate, this has created much controversy: Indeed, when does a fetus become human. At conception. At birth? Or some time in-between. < Man Alive, CBC Television's highly - acclaimed religious series, will explore these vital questions with fascinating film footage of the fetus, in a repeat telecast of its popular 1972 two-part series, Life Before Birth on Tuesday Feb 13 and Feb 19 at 10:30 p.m. HELL BE READY Pat Butti-Em, portraying a Hollywood drunk in a recently filmed NBC-TV "Adam-12" episode, wore a large cowboy hat. When asked about this, he replied, "Well, you know, Gene Autry and I made a lotta' Western movies together, and just in case he ever decides to do another one, I'm going to be ready." 16th-century historical drama shows a queen and ministers careering about the court on motorcycles. These bizarre scenes are part of what many critics regard as Britain's biggest comedy cult for more than a decade, and the craze now has spread to three continents. Monty Python's Flying Circus is the surrealistic title of a weekly television series rated as one of its most successful ever by the BBC which has already sold the show to 15 countries. What is perhaps most surprising about the program's overseas success is the unconven-tionaBty of its humor, which relies to a great extent on cruel, greedy and unscrupulous characters. Yet foreign audiences have warmed to Monty Python's scenes, ^which are madly irrational, incongruous, biting and timelessry satirical. The program has been seen in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland. Pakistan, West Germany, Yugoslavia, Switzerland, Lebanon, Denmark, Norway and Finland. IN THIRD SERIES Now in its third series here the show has been a boon to critics. Its abrasive humor has led to allegations that Monty Python is not even a comedy show but a statement on the futility of life and a grim underlining of the depths to which mankind has sunk. John Gleese, a tall, craggy-jawed Englishman who is one of the five-man team who both write and star in the series, denies such sinister implications but maintains that the toughness in the show reflects the writers' feeling of gloom about the world situation. "We basically put out what we think- is funny, but obviously what we write mirrors our per-sonalities and we all feel strongly that the world is in a mess," he said. BIG AUDIENCE The circus attracts a regularly weekly audience in Britain of almost 10 million, turned on by scenes in which women wear drooping moustaches, people talk completely in anagrams, and in which cartoon characters get struck by 20-feot hammers or suffer explosions inside giant mouths. The program's popu'arity has been that Cleese has been elected Lord Rector of St. Andrew's University, whsre he has also been given a degree of doctor of laws. "The abstract idea of cruelty is outrageously funny, provided the actual pain is net seen," says Cleese. "Almost every joke ever invented does somebody down." DID YOU KNOW?
