Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 8, 1975, Lethbridge, Alberta 24 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Saturday, February 8, 1975 Upholsterer says beginners should start with footstools EDMONTON (CP) If you can rcupholster a footstool or a kitchen chair properly, then you've mastered the basics of furniture upholstery, says Dieter Rahn, a partner in Ex- pert Upholstery Ltd. here. Mr. Rahn started in a Win- nipeg furniture manufactur- ing company in 1952. The German-born uphol- sterer recommends that be- ginners start with something a footstool or a kitchen chair. From there, it is easy to branch out into more difficult projects once the basic techniques have_ been learned. Most basic materials can be obtained at any reputable up- holstery store, and costs needn't be high. Essential materials include fabric, up- holstery tacks, a magnetic up- holstery hammer, cotton pad- ding, a bit of denim and thick thread'if a household machine is being used. Fabric varies between and a yard, padding is about 75 cents a yard and half a pound of tacks costs about "The most expensive item is the says Mr. Rahn, who refuses to recover furni- ture for homeowners if tie feels the fabric they want is "junk." He recommends material made of 100-per-cent nylon, which is available in tweeds, floral prints, and velvets, and is both durable and easy to clean. The next best choice would be a blend of 67-per- cent nylon and 33-per-cent vis- cose or rayon, "but don't re- verse that he warns. Yarn-dyed fabric is prefer- able to piece-dyed fabric be- cause it won't expose white threads when it begins to wear. "Look at the edge of the material when it is Mr. Rahn advises. "If there are no white threads, the fabric is yarn-dyed." He recommends "expanded vinyl" which has a layer of foam between the surface and the linen backing for kitchen chairs. "Expanded vinyls are eas- ier to work with because they stretch, and they stay soft longer than unpadded vinyls." While Mr. Rahn recom- mends that beginners enrol in a course to learn the tech- niques, he says simple uphol- stery may begin at home. Should a beginner choose to recover a footstool, the first step.after selecting the fabric is to trace the base pattern with chalk onto the fabric. The fabric is then cut half an inch outside the seam line, providing a seam allowance. If a square or rectangular stool is being recovered, the mid-points on all four sides are marked and one-quarter of an inch snipped off at each side. A line is then drawn from mid-point to each side, and trimmed, making the centre half-an-inch larger than the sides to allow for pad- ding. One layer of padding is then draped over the stool, and trimmed so that an extra inch covers all sides. "Then place the material over the padding, and turn the one-half-inch seam allowance to the outside, so the material will be flat." Tacks are placed hallway between each corner, taking care to pull the fabric straight down rather than sideways to eliminate wrinkles. The cor- ners are tacked; then perma- nent tacks are driven in about two inches apart .beginning at the centre, and the four mid- point tacks are removed. The seats of simple chairs are recovered the same way, pulling the fabric down as tightly as possible on the front corners before tacking. BOX 99 Ltthbridgt, Albtrta Women in law 'not treated like real TORONTO (CP) The Canadian Bar Association was told by an articling student this week that the member, male dominated legal profession in Ontario is one of the most dis- criminatory and chauvanistic groups in the province. Barbara Betcherman told about 450 persons attending a panel discussion, entitled Women and the Law, that typically, women in law are "not treated like real people" and are asked personal and offensive questions when they apply for jobs in legal firms. Instead of being asked about job experience, scholastic marks or ability, Miss Betcherman said she has been asked if she is a virgin, whether she intends to get married and what type of birth control she practises. She said the anti woman bias exists even in Osgoode Hall Law School, where a "jock shop attitude" prevails. The panel consisted of Miss Betcherman, former Liberal MP Judy LaMarsh and two lawyers who regularly appear on the CBC television program This Is The Law Hart Pomerantz and William Charlton. Miss LaMarsh, a practising lawyer for 25 years, said the at-' titude toward women law students does not change when they are called to the bar, but becomes worse. Women are not given the same opportunities to advance and are often treated as glorified secretaries by their male counterparts, she added. Miss LaMarsh said judges either "want to pat you on the bottom of. cop a feel if they or they adopt a paternalistic attitude and constantly tell women to "speak up." Mr. CharIton said he had never heard of women being asked the type of questions mentioned by Miss Betcherman. Miss LaMarsh, former health minister in the Liberal cabinet of Lester Pearson, said the problems faced by women in the legal profession extend-to all areas of society. Women are discriminated against in their jobs, marriages and in their ability to compete equally with men, Miss LaMarsh said. B.C. health officials fighting diphtheria VANCOUVER (CP) Health department officials in British Columbia are increas- ing public education programs and immunization services in an effort to stem the rising in- cidence of diphtheria and German measles in the province. The incidence of diphtheria has shot up dramatically in the last year, Dr. Ernest Bowmer, director of the provincial laboratory, said in an interview. While there were only seven cases reported during the 10- year period from 1958 to 1968, there were 351 cases between January and November of last year. There are several different strains of diphtheria, each en- tering the body through the nose, throat or skin. If un- treated, the disease can cause heart stoppage and paralysis. "People tend to become complacent about immuniza- tion but it's available via the school system and people who go through the school program should get said Dr. Bowmer. He said diphtheria im- munization, cannot be given to all adults because unlike children, some are adversely affected by immunization. Meanwhile, the incidence of rubella, more commonly known as German measles, increased to 217 cases last year from an average of about 14 between 1971 and 1973. Health department figures show that 90 per cent of the cases involved patients older than 14. Dr. Bowmer said this statistic is a reflection of the public immunization program launched for children up to age 12 during the last rubella epidemic in 1970. "We now are seeing the peo- ple who just missed out on that he said. Rubella is most dangerous to mothers in the early stages of pregnancy when it can cause -severe damage to the fetus. At a recent seminar in Van- couver, doctors were advised to obtain blood tests to deter- mine whether a woman of child-bearing age is immune to rubella. Dr. Tony Larsen, provincial epidemiologist, said the rubella vaccination service in British Columbia was extend- ed to cover all age groups last spring when the government began to supply vaccines to doctors and public health staff. Bicycle-exercise test detects heart disease TORONTO (CP) Dr. Rene F. Favaloro of Argen- tina, a heart surgeon, said this week that all men over 40 years old should be given an annual bicycle exercise test to detect heart disease. In a lecture at the Universi- ty of Toronto, Dr. Favaloro said some men have impaired circulation to their heart muscles without suffering any symptoms. The doctor, who pioneered the heart surgery that links the aorta with the coronary arteries to renew blood cir- culation to the heart muscle, said an electrocardiogram taken while the patient is resting does not detect the defects. He said treadmill or step tests also are inadequate. But Dr. Favaloro said that if the men are linked to an electrocardiogram, machine and blood pressure monitors while they take a bicycle test, symptoms can be produced by gradually increasing the resistance. Couple wrangling over deportation TORONTO (CP) Horten- sia Knox, 22, from El Salvador said this week she is attempting to convince Im- migration Minister Robert Andras-that the Immigration Act gives too much power to the Canadian partner in a marriage. Mrs. Knox said in an inter- view that her husband, John, of Toronto is accusing her of marrying him Jan. as a convenient method of being allowed to remain in Canada. There now is a deportation order against her but the ex- ecution of the order has been stayed temporarily. Mrs. Knox said she wants to remain in Canada long enough to obtain a divorce. She said she will have difficulty filing for divorce or enforcing alimony payments once she is back in El Salvador. Immigration officials said Mr. Knox has filed an af- fidavit with Canadian im- migration authorities that says he is not willing to spon- sor his wife's immigration to Canada. ;
