The O'Connor Sisters, with the four remaining sisters remembers like it was yesterday their vaudeville days when they trooped the boards with greats like Al Jolson, the Marx Brothers, Eva Tanguay (the "I Don't Care Will Rogers, Bilhe Burke, the Barrymores, Sophie Tucker, Buster Keaton, W C Fields The only genuine six- sister act in show business, they were stars between 1905 and the late 30s known for their Irish ballads and close harmony Now only four, Geraldine, Vera, Madeleine and Kathleen of the original eight sisters are alive They live still in the 122-year-old ancestral home just outside Toronto. Their Irish-born parents were among the original settlers of Alderwood, an area that is today suburbs. The show begins with the four O'Connor sisters leaving home for the theatre in a 1937 Phantom Rolls-Royce They arrive at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto There they reminisce in the empty theatre with its gilt and red plush- Suddenly the curtain is raised and there's an orchestra, old friends from show biz days, and dancers and the party gets underway Doug Byers, a cognoscente of the period, who conceived the program and knows the sisters well is master of ceremonies The sisters, now elderly, can still belt out a song as in those bygone days when there were no microphones, not even records, and film was in its infancy Three other Toronto old time entertainers, who ilso did the vaudeville circuit are on stage Howard Roth, who was billed as "the doctor of described as a soulful gentleman sings and plays four-string tenor guitar Rummy Bishop, who did a brother act with Joey Bishop, does a routine with hats and a cane. He was a song and dance man in the era Horace Lapp, a living legend who toured all-over Canada with different orchestras and dance bands and was known as Mr Show Biz is the orchestra conductor The show not only assembles those who knew show biz in the 20s but the 26-man orchestra is one of the finest ever assembled says CBC associate producer Doug Byers. During rehearsals, after the ladies sang, the orchestra musicians gave them a standing ovation and called "encore1" An anniversary party The O'Connor Sisters, belles of vaude- ville, who trooped the boards with greats like Al Jolson, The Marx Brothers, W.C.
