I I 1 Births, Deaths, In Memoriams I I Cards Of Thanks 8 DEATHS HENLEY Passed away at Taber on Tuesday, February 5, 1974, Phillip of Taber at the age of 56 years. Born at Lac Du Bonnett, Manitoba, November he joined the Canadian Forces during the Second World War and on returning from overseas he married the former Shirley Gold and moved to Taber in 1954 and worked for Wallace MacDonald and Sons Garage and later in the oil fields. Survivors wife Shirley, Taber; four sons, Edward, David, Donald of Taber, Gordon, the Canadian Forces, Fort Osborne, Manitoba; one daughter, Noreen of Taber; two brothers and two sisters. Prayers will be said in Humphries Funeral Chapel, Taber on Thursday, February 7 at p.m. Funeral services will, be conducted from St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, Taber on Friday, February 8 at 11 a.m., with Rev. HUMPHRIES FUNERAL HOME, Taber, are in charge of arrangements. MADILL Passed away in St. Paul's Hospital, Vancouver, on February 7th, 1974, Dr. J. S. Madill at the age of 70, beloved husband of Mrs. Evelyn Madill of 605 Savoy Towers, 5750 Larch St., Vancouver, B.C. Born in Shelburne, Ontario, the late Dr. Madill came to the Foremost district with his parents in 1910, where he took his public school education. He went back to Shelburne to obtain his high school education and on returning to Alberta, attended the University of Alberta, where he obtained his degree in medicine in 1930. After five years of general practice in Bow Island, he moved to Raymond, where he took over the medical practice of Dr. Leach. In 1945 he moved to Vancouver with his family where he specialized in diagnostic and therapeutic radiology. After serving as a radiologist in the North Vancouver General and later in St. Paul's Hospital he was 'appointed director of radiology there, a position he held for 16 years until his retirement in 1968. He was a past president of the B.C. Society of Radiologists as well as past president of the Pacific North Western Society '.of Radiologists. He was a member of Canadian Memorial United Church and served on the session there. Besides his loving wife he is survived by one daughter Mrs. Rodney McLeod of Sackville, N.B.; two sons, Dr. Stewart Madill of West Vancouver, B.C. and Mr. Peter Madill of Richmond, B.C.; 12 grandchildren and two brothers, Mr. H. A. (Bert) Madill and W. R. (Bob) Madill, both of Lethbridge. My employer pays me an allowance to cover my board and room while I am working at distant work sites away from my ordinary place of residence where I support my wife and family. Previously, I was told that this had to be included in income for income tax purposes because I was not a construction worker. I understand that this no longer applies. Is this correct? A. Yes. This exempting provision now applies to all workers employed at a distant work site providing they meet the other necessary conditions. Q. I arrived in Canada in April of 1973 and I am told that I have to prorate my standard deduction for medical fees and charitable donations when filing my income tax return. What does this mean? A. As explained in the Guide which accompanies your tax return, you need report only the income you earned after you arrived in Canada. On the other hand, you are not entitled to claim personal exemptions and the standard deduction for the full .year. For example, if you arrived in Canada on April 15 you would have resided here for 260 of the 365 days of 1973 and would be entitled to claim a standard deduction of of or instead of Your personal exemption would be calculated in a similar way. Q. Do I have to get receipts for charitable donations? A. Yes. You have to secure receipts for all claims for charitable donations. You may list your claim on the schedule provided with your income tax return, and you must attach the receipts to the return. Q. Can a divorced woman claim the equivalent married exemption of for a 13- year-old child (no income) in a mental institution, if she pays the expenses such as medical, clouting, etc. A. No. The child would have to live with the taxpayer in the self-contained domestic establishment maintained by the taxpayer. Q. I contribute, at my place of employment, to a pension plan. However, I want to have a larger pension when I retire I have also taken out a retirement savings plan with a trust company. What is the maximum contribution that I can claim oh my income tax form for both of them? A. As an employee you are allowed to deduct your contributions to' the pension plan and your registered retirement savings plan up to a combined total of or 20 per cent of your earned income if it is less than Q. I am self-employed and I pay into a registered retirement savings plan with an insurance company. I have no salaried income and understand that I can claim for income tax purposes, a maximum of for my retirement savings plan. Is this correct? A. If you are not covered by en employee pension plan you would be entitled to claim amounts paid into a registered retirement savings plan up to or 20 per cent of your earned income for the year, whichever is less. Q. I understand that the employment expense deduction can be claimed to a maximum of Can I still claim my union dues in addition to this'claim? A. Yes. You can still claim your union dues as you did in previous years. Please note, however, that receipts are not required for the employment expense deduction but you should secure receipts for your union dues and attach these to your return. College faculty allowed to use cars The Lethbridge Community College will- allow its faculty members to use their cars for transportation of students on field trips if they carry the required automobile insurance. Sone concern was expressed that if faculty were involved in an accident while using their cars for college business, the insurance deductible and any increase in insurance because of the accident would be the sole financial responsibility of the staff member. But the governors agreed that would be a responsibility the staff members would have committed themselves to when they decided to use their cars for college business. Staff members are paid 14 Construction to begin Construction is to begin immediately on a redi-mix concrete plant in the city's industrial park. The plant, scheduled to begin operation in early spring with a capacity of 800 cubic yards per day, will employ IS persons, including 10 drivers.
