VANCOUVER (CP) A woman's place, says Ann Livingstone, 19, of Vancouver is out-of-doors, not in a stuffy office. Pursuing this philosophy she has ended up as the Canadian National Railways' and probably Canada's, first female railway switchman. Ann; who graduated from Grade 12 last spring, tried for months to find an outdoor job, applying for everything from logging camp work to cleaning ditches for the highways department, without luck. She had taken an office job out of desperation when the CNR called her a few weeks ago to say her application for a switchman's job had been accepted. For the next couple of years at least, Ann's job will be at a switch in the Vancouver rail yards, because there are no bunkhouse facilities for switchwomen out of town. Dear Ann Landers: I'd like to say a word to that big mouth who signed himself, "Irked in Springfield." I work in a grocery store and make the magnificent sum of an hour. I work Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. Lovely, isn't it? As for his gripe that most cashiers aren't very polite, let me tell you that more than half of the customers are miserable. As a matter of fact, most people are rotten to the core. How can a cashier be polite when a guy comes in loaded, throws a case of bottled beer on your cash register and breaks the case? Then you have to smell the stuff all night. Today two guys gave me fives and insisted they were twenties. That trick is so old [NEW BINGO NEW LOYAL ORDER OF MOOSE 1234 3rd Ave. N. I live for the day when everything will be automatic and salespeople will be obsolete. You'll put your money in a machine and out will come the merchandise. Wouldn't that be great? Down With Humanity Dear Down: If ever a person was poorly suited to his job, you are. For the sake of the store and the customers, as well as your own, you should get into another line of work like maybe ice fishing in Alaska. Confidential To Can't Stand Your.
