LIMITED HATCHERY DEFT. 224 12th Street W. LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA I guess pump-engines were invented about 'the time Otto thought up the gasoline internal combustion idea. The first ones were pretty crude by the standards of today, and the models were changed and improved so often that one of each would fill a mighty big museum. I vaguely reme'hiber those used by Dad on his early well-drilling rigs; they had a barrel full of water for a cooling system, and stood upright with pipes, wires, and flywheels sticking out in all directions. Being single cylinder they vibrated everything loose regularly, and unless fastened down tight to a solid base they soon shook themselves into trouble. They had a 1910 model in the basement of the International branch house in Lethbridge, when I worked there in the 1930s. It did alright when you got used to its unusual character, and I think being an old company- product, it was more of a showpiece than a necessity. I'm sure the company could stand the expense of a modern power source to run a little polishing wheel used for cleaning up rusty machinery. When the weather was. bad or work a bit slack, the servicemen got stuck down there for hours taking machines apart and cleaning them up with this outfit. I wonder who got it when the branch house closed down. The first pump-engine I had much to do with was on a ranch where I worked in the winter of 1922. It was a standby for a windmill when there was no wind for several days at a time. The prairies have always been noted for an abundance of wind, but sometimes it failed and we had to pump by hand, or in cases of well- off ranchers, start up the pump-engine. This one was in a shed near the mill; and a long belt connected it to the pump-jack on the well. The huge water trough would stand a couple of windless days, but once that winter it ran dry. I knew a little about engines then, but nothing about the mysterious workings of a magneto. I just couldn't get any spark, and after trying till the boss got mad and told me to get pumping, I had to do as he said and spend hours on the pump handle. I guess there were hundreds of different makes of engines manufactured over the years, and the ones best known were International, McCormack-Deering, John Deere, and Fairbanks- Morse. Outside of a few kept in museums I think the junk- man has probably got most of them, but some farmers looking ahead may have theirs stored away carefully for the time electric power may fail.
