Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 5, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta February 5, 1S74-THE LETHBRIDQE HERALD Research Station report Genetic varieties improve cattle vigor By JOHN LAWSON Animal Geneticist The advantages of crossbreeding compared to straightbreeding in beef cattle are apparent in earlier puberty, higher conception rate, faster growth rate, and greater ability to withstand stress The basis for these advantages is hybrid vigor which results from the differences in the genetic background of the parental breeds. In general, the greater the difference in genetic background between the parental breeds, the greater the vigor in the crossbred offspring. If the proper consideration is given to the selection of the parental breeds, the maximum hybrid vigor from crossbreeding should arise from the production of a three-way cross calf from a first-cross cow and a bull of a third breed In this way both cow and calf will exhibit hybrid vigor The most desirable first-cross female should be highly fertile, a good mother, a good milker, and an easy calver Cow efficiency as related to size is not well defined, but a high ratio of calf weight to cow weight at weaning is desirable. Island Implements PhOM should be the presence of pigment around the eyes and udder and a docile temperament. The sire breed to be mated to the first-cross female should contribute growth rate, carcass excellence, and minimum calving problems When crossbreeding is based primarily on the production of first-cross dams, at least 40 per cent of the total cow population will have to be straightbred. This figure could be lower if crossbred bulls or rotational crossbreeding are used extensively. Rotational crossbreeding involves the use of three or more sire breeds in sequence, always using a sire of the breed that is least represented in the dam. Various combinations of breeds can be used to produce acceptable crossbred dams and market animals. Cattlemen can start with their existing cow herd-or they may purchase first- cross heifers as the basis for developing their breeding herd. Crossbreeding research at the Lethbridge Research Station is concentrated on two projects. The reproductive performance under range conditions of various first- cross dams produced from matings of Simmental, Limousin, and Charolais sires to Hereford, Angus, and Shorthorn dams is being evaluated. Also, a population of crossbreds derived from straightbred Herefords is being compared with a population of crossbreds derived from Brown Swiss, Holstein, Red Angus, and Hereford breeds 3 special RCA stereos one special price BUILT-IN STEREO-8 TAPE PLAYER ,FE 203S The Randolph Feature for feature, you can't find better value in furniture stereo anywhere!
