Turkish vet studies animal disease control By CHRIS STEWART Herald Staff Writer Rabies is practically unknown in Turkey, perhaps because small wild animals are scarce. This is the conclusion of Dr. Iskender Karakoc, graduate of the veterinary faculty of the University of Ankara, who, sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization, has been in Lethbridge these past 10 months studying at the Animal Disease Research Institute. But while rabies is practically non- existent in his native Turkey, due, he believes to the scarcity of rabies- carrying animals such as skunks, other animal diseases, such as brain infection, pneumonia and hoof and mouth disease, are very prevalent. He blames this on the fact Turkey is surrounded by so many small countries such as Syria, Iraq, Iran, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Greece with animal diseases passing easily from one country to another. "In Canada you are hemmed in by two great oceans and have only one neighbor, America to the south, so it is much easier for you to control animal he said. "Some of the diseases we have the- most difficulty with in Turkey are rare or don't even exist here. "Hoof and mouth disease, for instance, is very common in Turkey and gets in easily from the Middle East countries. The Turkish veterinarians are working very hard to control these diseases but they have a difficult job because the neighboring countries bring them in." STRIKE CONTROL "Turkey exports nearly head of beef cattle annually to Russia, controlled strictly by both governments but there are smaller countries in the Middle East less he said. "Cattle rustling between countries is very common, with no controls enforced and this only heightens the problem." Turkey has no shortage of animal fodder There is plenty of green grass in both eastern and western Turkey as well as along the Mediterranean coast with barley and wheat plentiful in the central region. Contrary to popular belief (held by some Canadians, he has found) Turkey is not like Arabia and India. It is a country of lush fruit bananas, oranges, lemons and grapefruit with an abundance of vegetables and rice, flowers and beautiful shoreline. Instanbul. the capital, has a population of four million and has both beautiful architecture and great natural beauty. He is amazed that in all his travels throughout Turkey he has met only two Canadian tourists among the thousands of Americans and Europeans. He finds this hard to understand in view of the fact that a night at the Hilton in Instanbul costs a mere Dr. Karakoc, the only vet FAO sponsored to Canada this year, was born in Kars in eastern Turkey, near Russia A member of a fanning family he appreciated the animal world at an early age and joined 500 other prospective vets in the five-year course offered at the University of Ankara, a city of one million, located miles from his birthplace. He later studied at the FAO laboratory in Instanbul before working with the central FAO office in Rome. "There is little unemployment in the land of the shishkabob (delicious pieces of meat and vegetables braised to perfection on a stick) and the dunarkabob (the big steak turned slowly on a according to Dr. Karakoc.
