Solve problem of tapping boundless energy of sun Burton moves feed grain resolution EDMONTON (CP) Repre- sentatives of the livestock in- dustry urged what tlicy called a revolutionary move in na- tional grain marketing: free movement of feed grain across Canada. Delegates to the 7th annual convention of the Western Stock G r o w e r s' Association agreed after lengthy debate to press for removal of. all restric- tions on the inter-provincial movement of oals and barley. The resolution calling for free movement of feed grams was presented by Dr. Gordon Burton of Clareshblm, Alta., on behalf of the Canadian Cattle- men's Association. "The present system is un- he said. "Its re- strictions are undermining the economy of the country. It is bad for the livestock feeders and western and eastern Can- ada because of price discrim- ination. In the long run it will te harmful for the grain pro- diicers because other parts ol the country will find alternate teds. I am distressed that we are piling subsidy on subsidy." Runs out of gasoline EISENSTADT, Austria (Ileulcr) A Czechoslovak musician fleeing to the West with Ills wife hidden in his car ran oul of gasoline just short of the border, but Czechoslo- vak officials helped to push the vclu'cle into Austria. Police said today Fery Jan- oscliku, decided to smug- gle out his wife and two chil- dren after being refused a visa extension letting him travel from his home in Bra- tislava to play in a dance bar in Austria. Five days ago he replaced his car's gasoline tank with a small container, hid his chil- dren under the floor and passed the Czechoslovak bor- der controls without trouble. But on a second trip with his wife, the car ran out of gasoline and the unsuspecting Czechoslovak border officials helped. TERKOIUST KILLED SAIGON (AP) A bomb hid- den in a radio blew up and killed the terrorist carrying it and wounded 11 otter persons Thursday night in a theatre in the town of Ben Tranh, 30 miles southwest of Saigon, the Saigon command reported. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Two Arizona scientists say they believe they have solved a prob- lem whose answer has long eluded efficient way of tapping the boundless cost-free energy of the sun. Dr. Aden B. Meinel of the University of Arizona and his wife Marjorie are building a device which will focus and trap sunlight. Tlie sunlight would be con- verted into heat which would he used to run conventional electri- cal generator stations. Such stations now get their heat from nuclear fission or fos- sil fuels such as coal. The heat converts water to steam, which turns turbines connected to gen- erators. "This isn't a new electricity generating system; it's a new fuel source for generators that already Mrs. Meinel told reporters. The first device, which the Heinels call a "credibility is expected to be ready in about three months. It is about the size of a large table. The heart of the Meinels' con- verter is a stainless steel pipe en which miscroscopically thin films of molybdenum, cesium and magnesium compounds are deposited. They allow sunlight to pass through, but prevent much of the energy it contains from radiating back out. Special lenses concentrate the sunlight before it strikes the pipe, generating temperatures up to degrees. A gas or liquid flowing through the pipe carries off the heat for use at the power plant. The Meincis expect to con- struct a demonstration plant within five years. The smallest such plant might cost mil- lion and generate 25 million watts of power. Once the solar converters were built, there would be no cost for the heat they gener- ated, the scientists said. There also would be no pollution, de- pletion of natural resources or danger of radiation as exists with many present power plants. Each plant would cover an area about the size of a foot- ball field. Meinel predicted the cost would become competitive if enough units were built.
