Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 3, 1972, Lethbridge, Alberta 6 _ THE LETHDRIDGE HERALD Tliurailny, February 3, 1973-------------- What is hido? jj JUDO DEMONSTRATION Guy Sunada of Lelhbridge throws Ron Senda, cilso of the cily, lo demonstrate judo technique during opening of Lelhbridge Family Y, fx" The sporl we know as Judo is a rnodificalion of an an- cient Fighting art known as Jiu-Jilsu. Jiu-Jilsu is sliiclly a self-defence arl and when its techniques circ carried through, they can injure or oven kill. Judo's main stress is on avoiding injury lo the opponent or self. The ranks in judo begin at ihc while belt for beginners (or no color) and go lo Ihc black bolt which is ihc "ex- perl" category. In Canada, the European syslern of bolt colors is followed in most provinces: os you go up Ihe ladder, yellow is fifth kyu, orange is fourth kyu, orcen is ihird kyu, blue is second kyu, and brown is first kyu. "Kyu" is ihc caleoory below black bells, which are graded in "Dans." The black bell is counted the other wny- the first grade is first dan or Shodan, ihen comes second dan or Ni- dan, ihird dan or Sandon, fourlh dan or Yondcin, and so on. The highest-ranking black bell in Canada is a sixlh dan. The highesf in the world is a lenth den, I he losl of these masters (of whom there were only K. Mifune, died in 1965. Higher and optional belt colors ore red wiih a while stripe, worn by holders of sixlh and eighth dan and ihe red belt worn by ninth and lenih dans. The "Dan" grade is the ideal for which all judo slu- clenls aspire. All grades are awarded on proficiency, and although Ihe brown belt first kyu is lough enough lo achieve, the hurdle from first kyu la {irsi dan black belt is a steep one to conquer. Correspondingly, each higher dan grade gets progressively more difficult to gain, The beginning age depends on pcuiicular young- sler's physical and other development, bul eight to 10 years is the common age period. As for later ages, in Canada we have had judo sludenls begin at nearly 30 and still reach black belt grade and there are examples of men beginning judo in their 50s and 60s. Ir depends on you, not judo itself. 1966 BLACK BELT Wil- ma Bradfield of Lethbridge attains first Black Bell for a woman in 2, 1966. for 1972 tourney Twenly-four judo clubs from Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia will be guests of the Loihbridge Fam- ily Y judo club Saturday, Competitions, sanctioned by the Canadian Kodokah, will be held at (he Family Y starling at 11 a.m. for juniors in ihe 60-80-pound class! followed by juniors in the 90- 110-pound class at with senior and black bell com- petitions starting at 6 p.m. The public is invited lo walch all 01 par I of ihe com- pelitions.
