Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - February 2, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta PACE 6 'Star Trek? image brought fame Nimoy can't shake Mr. Spock BURBANK (NBC) - One ot Leonard Nimoy's problems is convincing people that his career neither began or ended with Mr. Spock. It was, of course, as the pointed-eared, emotionless Mr. Spock in the "Star Trek" series on the NBC Television Network that Nimoy gained international fame. But he has been making films and guest-starring on TV shows for about 20 years. "Nevertheless," he says, "it seems to surprise a lot of people that I don't have a green face and my ears are normal. "But I can appreciate the fact that while I've plaved more normal characters than weirdos, it's the off-beat characterization? that hsve lifted me from comparative cbscuritty." The lean S-footar played another off-beat character in "World Premiere: Baffled" which was cclcrcast in the new "NBC Tuesday Night at the Movies" Jan. 3D. Nimov stars with Svsan Hampshire and Vera Miles in a drama about a race driver (Nimoy) whose flashes of extrasensory perception during a race reveal that a woman (Miss Miles) and her daughter are in grave danger. "Remember what Hamlet said: 'There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.' "So who am I to say?" Nimoy I asks, "I've never had any per sonal experience with the supernatural. The nearest I came was when I was a kid and explored a haunted house. The police chased me ort so I never did find out if there was a real ghost in there." Leonard was born in Boston, Mass. He became interested in the theater while in high school and won a scholarship to Boston College, where he studied drama. An eoiscde of "The Lieutenant" attracted the attention ofj producer Gene Rcddenbei-rv, who cast him as Mr. Spock. He appeared in all 75 episodes of the series. After "Star Trek" he starred for two seasons as Paris ] on "Mission: Impossible." Nimoy also is a singer. He starred as Tevyi in a road company version of "Fidd'er on the Roof" and has recorded several albums. But to millions of "Star Trek" fans he'll always bp Mr. Snock.
