(AP) Police and the case of the mis- sing [lower pot have led to the downfall of the Miracle Detec- tive Agency. "We thought it would be a miracle if we ever got a case. That's why we named it that said John Mengh. the 13-year-old co-founder. John and his partner, Cole Mayes, also 13, formed the agency last fall with They bought two authentic looking badges, business cards and a mail order criminal in- vestigator's kit. The boys distributed busi- ness cards with the motto: "We guard and investigate anything." Prospective clients could call Cole at the "North Office (his parents' while John was reachable at the "South Office (his parents' John's mother, Jesse Mengh, did not object to the new business until a predawn caller asked one morning for a detective. "The caller was a man, not a Mrs. Mengh said. The boys' first case was to investigate the loss by a rela- tive of a flower pot. But a suspicious apartment man- ager called police after seeing their badges and business cards. Unfortunately, the boys had their cards printed at the same firm which prints offi- cial police business cards. The word "police" appeared on the cards. A policeman showed up a short while later at John's South Office and confiscated the badges and business cards. Undaunted, the Miracle De- tectives planned to start a newspaper. "But our mothers have sign- ed us up for bowling John said. SEATTLE (AP) Clean hands helped two young men escape authorities after para- chuting 520 feet from the Space Needle here. Carl Fast, operator of a nearby service station, told police he took down the li- cence number of a blue van that sped through his station lot just after the parachute in- cident. However, Fast said he took the number down on his palm. Before he could pass it on to police, he forgot and washed his hands. PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) Police in Portsmouth were called to a downtown laun- dermat early Thursday. In- side they found a 28-year-old man spinning around in a clothes dryer. man later was quoted as saying he did it because "I wanted to see what it was like riding in a space ship."
