Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 1, 1975, Lethbridge, Alberta 18 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Saturday, February 1, 1975 Blues douse Flames By CHUCK SVOBODA The Canadian Press Los Angeles Kings often have been described this season as a team that beats its opponents by putting them to sleep with a dull style of close- checking patterns prescribed by coach Bob Pulford. That the Kings have not suc- cumbed to their own sedation is borne out by their leading position in the National Hockey League Norris Division, a lead which they de- fend tonight in a match against the second-place Montreal Canadiens. In the only NHL game Fri- day, St. Louis Blues defeated Atlanta Flames 4-2. The Kings lead their divi- sion with 71 points which, along with Buffalo Sabres of the Adams Division, makes them the top points earners in the league. Montreal is second in the Norris circuit, two points behind Los Angeles. The Kings have been looking forward to tonight's game, so much so that they almost ig- nored another opponent Thursday night. Washington Capitals jumped to a 2-1 first- period lead before the Kings, woke up with four goals in the second period. Bobby Leduc, journeyman hockey player suddenly thrust into the difficult task of coach- ing a major league club three weeks ago, already is beginn- ing to make his predecessor look bad. Leduc took over Toronto Toros when Billy Harris, un- der pressure from club direc- tors because of the club's in- consistent play and further distracted by family illnesses, stepped down. When he took over, the for- mer Toros forward said he planned to, demand that the players get into better condi- tion and pay more attention to the fundamentals of the game. The new reyime was in con- trast to Harris's policy of let- ting his players use their own judgement regarding condi- tioning. After a shaky start, the new coach now has five wins and a tie against three losses and the Toros' current winning streak stretched to four games Friday night when they beat Vancouver Blazers 6-0. 'It'ii a different team from the one we had a month said goalie Gilles Gratton who stopped 33 shots to record his second shutout of the season. "We're hustling more in practice as well as the games now. We're simply putting it all together." 'in other games, New England Whalers edged Baltimore Blades 4-3, Minnesota Fighting Saints beat Houston Aeros 4-1 and Cleveland Crusaders blanked Edmonton Oilers 2-0. ST.
