FRIDAY, FEBRUARY "LISTINGS FOR SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2 TO FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8 Giants of the earth Stretching back for hundreds of millions of years, nature's creatures have been undergoing a process of evolution. At one time animals of immense size roamed the face of the earth. Most of these leviathans of the past exist only as fossils today but there are creatures still considered giants in our own time. On Sunday, February 3 at 5 p.m., CTV's "Untamed World" studies these still extant creatures, the white rhinoceros, the giraffe and the African elephant in the episode "Giants." All three of these creatures have evolved from a different ancestor of the past, and each has been slowly decreasing in number. The white rhino is among the largest living land animals with a huge body and massive limbs. It is over eleVen feet in length and can weigh better than two tons. It is ill tempered and dumb, making it dangerous and unpredictable. More beautiful and graceful than the rhino is the giraffe. It reaches an average of sixteen feet, can weigh one ton when fully grown and has a neck span of ten to twelve feet. Without question the best known of the giants is the African elephant. He is a highly complex, emotional, sensitive and intelligent animal and has been associated with man for over four thousand years. It ,is the largest land animal on earth and fears no beast or man. Historic meeting on Parliament Hill Africa pygmy tribes Legend through the ages has placed pygmy tribes of Central Africa outside the human realm. Not gods yet not people, they are primitive and unique beings who inhabit a severe environment. On Friday, February 8 at 10 p.m., CTV presents "Primitive Man: The Spirit a filmed record of intimate tribal rites including the celebration of NGENGIS, god of the forest, a festivity held only once every five years, thus making this film all the more special. Shot on location throughout an inhospitable 800-square mile stretch of African Equatorial Forest on the border of Cameroun and Congo-Brazzaville, film crews spent months developing friendships and gaining the confidence of one of the major tribes who subsequently allowed them to record their life and customs.
