Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 1, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 6 THB LETHBRIDOE HERALD Friday, February 1, HOME OF THE WEEK Landscaping is worthwhile in many ways DESIGN R3-816 R3-816 is a compact, modern ranch home able to lit on a 60-foot lot in most jurisdictions and ideal where square feet is the minimum living area re- quired. The back and front entries are both recessed and fully sheltered and the kitchen faces front, a feature many homemakers appreciate. Viewing this home from a distance, the cottage roof appears to fit snugly, protecting its occupants beneath. The organized move- ment of nearly Europeans to Australia has been one of the major popula- tion shifts in the 20th century. The Home Landscape is the IN Thing! And so it should be say the men and women of LANDSCAPE CANADA, the official publication of the Canadian Nursery Trades Association. When you are trying to live in this mad, mad, mad, mad world; when you are trying to escape the social and economic rat race; when that drive in the country is getting farther and farther away; just bring the country to your own back door. Land- scape planting provides both a physical and aesthetical en- vironment to combat the stresses and strains in a com- plicated society. Beautiful landscaping ex- tends a welcome like a hearty handshake, and well- maintained plantings become early messengers of your hospitality. Just as you put your "best foot forward" when meeting people', the front yard is both an expression of your in- dividuality and your feelings toward the neighborhood you live in. A man's home is still his castle. It has become a family refuge from a busy and chang- ing world. As one of your greatest investments your home and property should be used to its fullest extent. The quality of our lives in Canada can be enhanced and made DESIGN No. R3-816 1254 SQ. LANDSCAPE CANADA lists 10 different ways in which home landscaping adds to the fun of being alive: 1. Home landscaping is a sound economical invest- ment increasing in value as the trees and shrubs mature. 2. It increases the re-sale value of a home... much more so than the relative- ly low cost originally. 3. Landscaping gives your home a "Lived In" look. 4. It provides a beautiful setting for pleasure and entertainment in the out- doors. 5. It provides flowers in spr- ing and summer, and fruits at harvest time. 6. Landscaping provides relaxation and peaceful rest amidst the trees and shrubs. 7. The home landscape provides a barrier to the noise of a busy street, and a filter to the dirt anu dust in the atmosphere. 8. It makes the property cooler in the summer by means of shade, and in winter affords a protec- tion against the bitter winter winds. 9. It provides privacy fn a crowded world. 10. Landscaping provides that satisfaction of creativity inherent in all of us; for man shaped the landscape where there was only the bare earth. A beautiful and informative 12 page lithographed pamphlet intitled "Landscape Beauty Depends on People" is available from LANDSCAPE CANADA, 1568 Carting Ave. Ottawa, Canada, KiZ 7M5. Your garden By IsabelleR. Young, F.R.H.S. HURRAY FOR SEED TIME! I think one of the exciting things about the New Year is when all the beautiful seed and nursery catalogues make their appearance. It's a real thrill and also the thought, that spring can't be far behind, and once again we get itchy fingers to start planting seeds. And as usual, there are so many lovely new varieties to choose from. Let me give you a few examples. With the high cost of living, more people will be planting vegetables. Gold Crop beans is an AH America Winner for 1974, resistant to disease and hot weather and matures in 45 days. Pods are round, straight and deep golden in color, averaging 6Vz inches in length. Moongold is another new, ear- ly wax bean, golden yellow in color, a heavy yielder and ex- cellent for freezing. Purple Pod Snap Bean is a remarkable bean and has a built-in blanching indicator for freezing. When the time is up, about 2 minutes, the pods turn a deep green. They will germinate in colder soils more readily than other beans. Green Arrow or Double- Podded peas are new, from England. It is a heavy cropper in limited space and has long pods confining 9 to 10 peas, excellent for freezing. Vines grow about 26 inches high and the peas mature in 62 days. Three Kings is also an introduction from England and is much like Green Arrow, but slightly shorter, with the rare and valuable feature producing three pods together, thus making it the easiest of all peas to harvest. Red Pak beet is an out- standing introduction and has a dark red color with little or no zoning. If you like to grow Brussels Sprouts, Green Pearl is one of the most popular, open pollinated European strains, although it is later than Jad Cross, maturing in 120 days. Bravo Broccoli matures in. 76 days and is considered the best strain for commercial production or home growers, with immense 8 to 9 inch Central heads. Green Hornet Broccoli is 78 days with a' medium sized central head and highly recommended for market gardening, processing and home gardens. For late, storage cabbages, April Green matures in 99 days has globe-shaped, dark green heads. Ultra Green also Make electric repairs easily matures in 99 days is quite un- iform and keeps its color after several months in storage. In carrots, there is Canuck, one of the hybrid varieties, is a long carrot and the yield is ex- cellent. Klondike Nantes is highly recommended for market gardeners, canners, freezers and home gardeners. This matures in 56 days and. the roots average 8 inches in length. Gold Pak Elite is more uniform than the Gold Pak Improved. Snowmound cauliflower matures in 60 days and was developed especially for late summer and fall crops. The heads are of medium size. Marketmore 70 is a darker green cucumber than the original Marketmore and dur- ing the hot, dry weather it does not seem to get the light green spots and has good tolerance to scab and mosaic. Salty matures in 53 days and is considered one of the first white spine gynoecious hybrids with a high tolerance to scab as well as mosaic, powdery mildew and downy hybrids produce all female flowers. After two years of crop failure, there is now seed available for Minilake, head lettuce, similar in size to Sou Pennlake, but about a week earlier. Heads are very un- iform, solid and dark green. Ithaca M.I. matures in 85 days and is excellent for transplanting on sandy land. For a storage onion, Canada Granite, 99 days, should prove popular, in the medium sized onions. Super Elite is 109 days but larger and with the extra hardness and plenty of skin, which should improve storage capabilities. A gold medal winner is Darki parsley, 77 days. If you prefer a green pepper, Early Canada Bell, 67 days is recommended, with fairly large fruit, six to seven on a plant. More tomatoes are being grown by home gardeners every year, and Ultra Boy VFN, 72 days is considered the best of the large varieties of the "Boy" series. For a jumbo beefstake variety Veebrite is the selection you need. New Flower selections will be presented to you next week. NOTE: There is a service charge of 25 cents if readers wish a -per- sonal answer to their garden- ing problems. The address is Mrs. Isabelle R. Young, 3620 Centre B. Street, N.W., Calgary, Alberta T2K OV8. By DONAL R. BRANN A new book can help you re-think your electrical needs and existing wiring. Entitled Easi-Bild Simplifies Electrical Repairs, it offers simplified step-by-step direc- tions and easy to understand illustrations that take all the fear, mystery and inflated costs out of many electrical repairs. Knowing how a receptacle, fixture or appliance is installed permits replacement at lowest possi- ble cost. If a fuse keeps blowing, don't panic into thinking it's a big deal. Most shorts can be traced and fixed easily if you have mapped your circuits and know which outlet, fixture and switch is on each circuit as suggested in this new book. Never overload, the book warns. Before purchasing new equipment, check "start up" 'wattage motor driven equip- ment requires. Decide where it is to be installed. To avoid blackouts, poor TV and radio reception, dimming or flicker- ing lights when equipment starts, add up present wattage on circuit. Then run a new cir- cuit if this is required. For families that have children prone to push hair- pins and small articles into outlets, there is a safety outlet with an automatic snap cap. The cover is spring loaded so it must be turned to insert the plug. While not guaranteed to mystify a mechanically inclin- ed youngster, it does provide some protection. The book il- lustrates how to install this Learning to solve electrical problems while all circuits are operative is relatively easy. It's like learning to swim in calm, shallow water. Figuring out what needs to be done, after a circuit goes 2 Wire Cable SWITCH LOOP dead, is like learning to swim after falling into deep water. Read this book and you'll learn to live electrically, a lot more economically.
