Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - December 31, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta A WARM WELCOME AWAITS YOU MARQUIS HOTEL The Lethbridge Herald TELEVISION GUIDE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1971 LISTINGS FOR SATURDAY, JANUARY 1, TO FRIDAY, JANUARY 7, 1972 THE ENTERPRISE OF ENGLAND - In the fifth episode of Elizabeth R, the 90-minute BBC series on the life and times of Elizabeth I, John Woodvine (left) as Sir Francis Drake moves centre stage in the story of Britain's mobilization to meet the threat posed by Spain. The Enterprise of England, for telecast on Sunday, Jan. 2 at 9 p.m. (in color) reaches its climax with Drake's victory over the Spanish Armada. In this scene from the episode, Drake consults with Walsingham (played by Stephen Murray) the secretary of state. Sports dominate holiday fare January, 1, 1972 - New Year's Day and a great one for family entertainment on the CTV and CBC Television Networks with sports, music, variety and a motion picture classic. At 7:00 p.m. on January 1, CTV viewers are invited to go Rollin' On The River with Kenny Rogers and The First Edition. Special guest stars are Barbara McNair and Andy Kim. Movie fans of all ages will want to watch CTV's Academy Performance at 9:00 Saturday, January 1, the 1950 classic Sunset Boulevard, starring Gloria Swanson, William Holden and Erich Von Stroheim. Sunset Boulevard won four Academy Awards plus the Motion Pictures Critics Best Actress Award for Miss Swanson and Best Actor Award for William Holden. Sports fans across the country "can watch the Cartad i a n Hockey tour of Sweden plus the 50th Anniversary of hockey in Sweden on the Wide World Of Sports from 4:30-6:00 p.m. An extra bonus for sports viewers in Toronto, Kitchener, Sudbury, R e g i n a, Saskatoon, Calgary, Lethbridge and Edmonton this New Year's Day is the annual college game from New Orleans -The Sugar Bowl - telecasting at 10 a.m. The game is between Oklahoma and Auburn University and promises to be fast and tough. On CBC-TV Channel 7 the famous Rose Bowl Parade at Pasadena, Calif., will be televised at 9:30 a.m. with the actual game at 2:45 p.m. There will be a sports review of 1971 at 12 noon and addresses by Gov. Gen. Roland Michener and Prime Minister Trudeau at 2:15 p.m. There is NFL action at 5:30 p.m. and an NHL game at 6 p.m. Elizabeth vs Philip of Spain Spanish Armada defeated Events following the death of Mary Queen of Scots bring about a confrontation between Philip of Spain and Elizabeth I of England in the fifth episode of Elizabeth R, BBC's 90-minute historical drama series currently showing on CUC-TV, Sundays at 9 p.m. (in color). This episode, The Enterprise of England, for telecast Jan. 2, 1972, takes its title from the fleet launched by Philip in an effort to avenge Mary of Scotland's execution, which project (he Spanish king called the Enterprise of England. Drake emerges as a central character in tMs chapter of the life of Elizabeth R. In the series which stars Glenda Jackson in the title rote, he is portrayed by John Woodvine. Despite her brother - in - law Philip's warlike stance, Eliza- beth is afraid of war and its cost, preferring to pin her hopes on peace talks which are in progress with Spain, in the Netherlands. Her secretary of state, Walsinghani, warns her that the talks are just a device to give Spain more time to prepare its fleet. Sir Francis Drake meanwhile sails into the port of Cadiz and burns, sinks and damages a sizeable number of Philip's warships, Elizabeth is furious, having ordered Sir Francis back tc England; and Philip orders his Captain General, Santa Cruz to attack England immediately, despite the depletion of his armada. Santa Cruz is HI, so the attack is postponed. Walsingham is pressing Elizabeth to mobilize her forces, but she still refuses to believe that Philip will actually attack j England. When the Spaniards withdraw from the peace talks, and her astrologer predicts a major disaster in 1588, Elizabeth moves to defend the nation. Three months pass, and Philip's Invincible Armada has not arrived. The Queen blames Walsingham for misinforming her. Then she sees a tract by the fervent Catholic Cardinal Allen, a tract which denounces her and which Philip lias approved. Elizabeth is convinced, and goes to Tilbury to inspire her troops, amid the cheers of he people. While she is there, news is brought that Sir Francis Drake 'ias met and defeated the Ar-rtada. On this victorious note, she returns to London to find that her favorite, the Earl of Leicester (Robert Dudley) is dead. 1 New programs slated for CTV Viewers across Canada of the CTV Television Network can look forward to three new mid-season programs appearing in January 1972. The programs are The Don Rickles Show, Me And The Chimp and The Amazing Kreskin. In addition, two programs, Room 222 and Story Theatre, will be switching time periods. The Don Rickles Show will be seen on the full Network each Friday evening, 7:30-8:00 p.m. Rickles appears in this 30 minute situation comedy as Don Robinson, an advertising agency executive who finds himself constantly victimized by today's highly computerized society. He is ably assisted in his weekly paranoia by Louise Sorel, who plays bis wife, Erin Moran as his daughter, Robert Hogan, his agency friend, and Jody Cassmore as his long suffering secretary. Premiere date for The Don Rickles Show will be Friday, January 14. The second new program and the replacement for Shirley's World is The Amazing Kreskin, premiering during the week of January 16. Kreskin is a mentalist, an explorer of psychic phenomena. On his weekly 30 minute program, Kreskin entertains and informs as he reveals the startling capacities of the mind. Also to be seen on a local scheduling basis will be Me And The Chimp, starring Ted Bes-sell. This new program will be replacing Funny Face in CTV's program line - up because of the illness of Sandy Duncan, star of Funny Face. This delightful half hour comedy revolves around the situations that Ted Bessell and his family find themselves in when they become the owners of a small, lovable and highly mischievous chimpanzee.
