Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - December 30, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Ask Andy METEORITES Andy swids a complete 20 volume set ol the Merit Students Encyclopedia to Wendy Cropf, age 14, of Lititz, Pa for her question. How can you tell when you find a meteorite? A fallen meteorite once whizzed through the solar system maybe for billions of years. When it struck the earth, it became grounded forever Finding it is very ex- citing, for you then own a genuine traveller from outer space What's more, if it happens to be a special meteorite called a tektite, it may be a genuine moon rock. When a meteorite lies on the ground for a long time, it may become disguised as an or- dinary earth pebble. This is because the weather tends to wear away its telltale crusty surface Actually it is made from ordinary minerals which are common in the earth True, their crystal formation is somewhat different, but it usually takes an expert to detect them. For the average rockhound, the obvious clue is the meteorite's dark, glassy crust This was formed as it plummeted down through the atmosphere, turning its speed energy into heat energy. It became so hot that its glowing surface melted and formed that glassy crust. Gases within bubbled out, adding pits and bumps. Chances are, the rush through the air also molded the whole thing into a rough cone shape. If an odd shaped pebble looks like it has been bashed around in a furnace, chances are it is a meteorite. It may be a metallic meteorite, made mostly of iron with traces of nickel. In this case, the inside under the crust is silvery gray. When sliced, polished and seen under a microscope, its crystalline formation reveals a neat network of streaks in a pattern of diamonds and letter Xs It may be a stony meteorite made from silicates and several of 30 other common earth minerals. Its dark, glassy crust tends to be more bumpy and less pitted Its interior is usually grayish, stony material arranged in un- usual granule formations. Often its stony minerals are mixed with specks of iron. Certain meteorites are made from soft clays and crumbly charcoals Usually they shatter on impact and are decomposed by the weather So the meteorites we find are most likely to be either the metallic or the stony types. Both have dark, glassy crusts with bumps or pits or both. asked by chil- dren of Herald readers should be mailed to Ask Andy, P.O. Box. 765, Huntlngton Beach, California 92648. You do not nor- mally pass partner's low-level penalty double with a void in the opponents' suit, yet there is no bid you can conveniently make, for partner rates to be short in hearts. We are not in the habit of bidding three-card suits, but passing one no trump isn't appealing and logically this bid is sound. By responding one no trump to our one diamond opening, partner has denied holding a four-card major suit. Since he would have raised dia- monds with four-card support, by inference he must have at least four clubs, and would not be iurprised if we struck his five- or six card suit. Even if your partner's response was shaded, this hand has bright prospects for game. The way to announce that is with a jump shift By showing your strength immediately, you will be able to explore all possibilities without having to worry that partner might drop you short of game. Lamb M.D. Dear Dr. Lamb I am 46 and had my ovaries removed last year. I'm taking Per- marin daily. My doctor is a firm believer in hormones, but I have some reservations about them. In your column you stated that a good examination is needed to find out whether or not hor- mones are needed. What sort of an examination? A pelvic examination would not reveal this, would it? I don't believe my doctor gives any special thought to whether or not his patients need female hormones. He just prescribes them. He says they keep you young, prevent heart attacks, prevent dowagers hump and that there is no danger. I've read enough to know that not all professional men hold this view. Also, I have heard personally of cases of cancer and then the person was taken off hormones, and cases of blood clots and the patient taken off hormones or their condition attributed to birth control pills. I would appreciate your view on the use of hormones and what constitutes a good examination Dear Reader First, it is usually a good idea to provide hormone replacement when the ovaries are removed at a fairly young age Your doc- tor's treatment of you in this regard is the norm. During a pelvic examination if there is a fairly advanced degree of hormone deficiency, drying and shrinking of the tissues can be seen. A few cells taken with a swab as done in a Pap test for cancer can also be stained and ex- amined under the microscope. The color reaction to the stain gives information about how much hormone the body is producing. The urine can also be ex- amined for the amount of hor- mone it contains. Your doctor may have done more than you think Most patients make the mistake of thinking that all the doctor does is what they see Actually he often does more work when you are not in his office than he does you are there. All those tests have to be studied and the total picture of information evaluated Female hormones do not cause cancer of the breast or cervix. There is some concern about how they are given in relation to cancer of the lining of the womb (endometnal cancer) That is why cyclic bleeding is sometimes in- duced. The shedding of the lin- ing of the uterus, as occurs in menstruation, may be helpful. Many doctors do believe that once a cancer occurs that female hormones may increase its growth and spread But, that is much different than saying it causes cancer Some women do have an increased tendency to have blood clots while taking female hormone or from increased formation of hor- mones during pregnancy. Other women have clots form anyway without taking anything. So do men think about President Nixon's problem. When a woman has this problem with birth control pills or hormones it can usually be managed by small doses of medicine used to prevent blood clots, com- Fun with figures By J.A.H. Really, your doctor is doing the right thing for you. Think of it as replacement therapy for what your body would have been doing anyway with normal ovaries. Dear Dr. Lamb Am I hurting myself by placing a flat rock (20 pounds) on my stomach? I usually lie flat on the floor, place the rock on my stomach and concentrate on flexing my stomach muscles It's very difficult for me to lose my flabby stomach. Swimming, bicycle riding or exercising all summer did not even phase the fat bulge. I'm 47, female and weigh 150 pounds. I'm 67 inches tall I was warned by a friend that a heavy object on the stomach is unhealthy. I disagree Dear Reader Whether a heavy object on the stomach is dangerous or not depends on what it is. If you are not careful you will win the weight-lifting contest for the stomach muscle division. Whenever you want to strengthen a muscle you should do exercises that contract that muscle. You do exercises that bend the elbow to strengthen the biceps. By using a weight while bending the elbow and contracting the biceps you progressively strengthen and enlarge the biceps muscle. The main stomach muscles are attached at the lower part of your ribs and to the ligaments and bones of the pelvis When you do a sit-up these muscles are contracted and strengthened Ordinary sit-ups affect the upper muscles most and lying on your back while lifting your feet off the floor with the knees straight helps strengthen the lower muscles. So sit-ups and leg lifts or those exercises tfiat are modifications of these basic exercises are the ones that help to tighten up the ab- domen Voluntarily contracting and relaxing the abdominal muscles helps, too, whether you are lying down, sitting or standing Literally sucking in that abdomen as much as you can and holding this position five to 15 seconds, resting, and then repeating the manoeuver for regular exercise periods daily does help some Your problem is not un- usual You simply cannot get rid of a fat abdomen without getting rid of fat A person with poor muscle tone and a sagging pot can improve the shape of the abdomen with ex- ercise, but if you have fat in- side the abdominal cavity and under the skin, the only thing that works is eliminating fat This usually requires a change in diet, combined with an ex- ercise program There is no way you can compress a pound of lard and make it smaller The same is true of body fat Now that rock on the stomach may not cause you any trouble, but I'm not wild about the idea People who have a hernia through the diaphragm shouldn't do this because the increased pressure would help force the stomach through the hole in the diaphragm. Obesity contributes to this type of her- nia, and it is quite common in middle-aged or older people Pregnancy causes a tem- porary hernia of this sort in over half of pregnant women. If you have no tendency toward a hiatal hernia and have had no difficulty with the rock, I doubt it will harm you, but don't expect too much from it. You can get much better results if you can lose excess body fat with a good dietary program. That doesn't mean one of the fad or crash dtet efforts, either.
