Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - December 27, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Friday, December 27, 1974 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD 33 HOME OF THE WEEK Your Garden Perennials add to rock garden This Cape Cod cottage is just over the sq. ft. minimum required by many municipalities. Its 34 foot width is also an advantage because of high land costs but, if the frontage is available, it lends itself readily to the addition of a garage, or garage and breezeway at the right rear. Its simple roofline and rectangular plan make the most of the inherent economy of the one and one half storey design and this house should provide living space at the least possible cost per square foot. With two bedrooms on the main floor and two more upstairs, it will appeal particularly to young couples who can leave the upstairs to be finished later as the family increases in number. The main floor by itself shows a compact, self contained two bedroom house. Perennials in the rock gar- den will provide a wonderful display from spring to fall if the proper selections are planted. Those that brighten up our spring include Alyssum saxatile, very attrac- tive with bright yellow flowers growing eight to 12 inches in height. Aquilegia bertolina with blue flowers and A. flabelata with blue and white flowers, growing up to nine inches. Arabis alpina rosea grows six inches and has bright rose flowers from April to May. Armeria or Thrift blooms spring and summer and is ideal for cer- vices. A. caespitosa is six inches high with pale lilac flowers. A variation of this is the one known as 'Roger Bevan' which grows two inches with flowers similar to the previous one, except darker. The Aubretias are always most colorful in the spring and go particularly well with Alyssum saxatile. Some of the nicer ones include Dr. Mules deep purple, Belisha Beacon crimson, Gloriosa large clear pink, Triumph lavender blue with white eye. They grow from six to eight inches high. Iberis or Candytuft are lovely specimens for the rock gar- den. I. jordani blooms in the spring and is quite compact, growing four to six inches. I. sempervirens has also white flowers but not as compact as the former. There are some very attrac- tive Oxalis that are real gems, and there are also a few that are classed as "pernicious weeds." Two that you might try are 0. enneaphylla, two inches with flowers white or pale or deep pink. 0. magellanica grows one inch and has white flowers. Phlox sumulata grows four to six inches and has rose, lilac, pink and white flowers from spring to summer. There are many species of Primula, blooming :v NAME ADDRESS (Pleate Print) LETH. -The Herald At Home at different times of the year. A useful and long flowering plant is the Achillea tornen- tosa nine inches, yellow flowers A. ageratifolia is six inches with white, daisy-like blooms. Some of the cam- panula make a lovely display with their colors of blue and white or pink. C. carpatica dwarf hybrids four inches, white to dark blue. C. glomerata acaulis four inches, violet blue clustered flowers that nestle in the foliage. C. garganica two inches, elegant blue trailer. C. betuhfolia four inches, pink or white. The Dianthus genus has many out- standing varieties of which D. alpinus, four inches, is to be recommended. This is sweetly scented and comes in white to crimson, through lilac and pink. D deltoides is six inches, rosy pink to red and white. D neglectus four inches, cherry red blossoms Gypsophila repens four inches, a prostrate form with pink flowers tinged with white There are many beautiful Saxifragas to choose from as well as some of the Sedums and Sempervivums. Thyme is a lovely mat forming plant, well suited to cervices. T serphyllum lanuginosus is a nice lilac specimen. T serphyllum one to four inches has fragrant white flowers All the plants mentioned are perennials which are a permanent feature in the rock garden. There are also dwarf annuals one could include to brighten up a spot here and there, perhaps next to the spring flowering varieties, but I would suggest you do not crowd the plants, whatever you use.
