Dave and John originally started out in June, 1570, just to do for "educa- tion, experience, something that had never been done, the surviving brother recalls, but soon de- cided to give more meaning to their walk around the world bv doing it to promote UNI- United Nations In- ternational Children's Emer- gency Fund. 4 L We thou.2ht about the peace he said, "hut then wo thought If we walk for children, not too many people are going to say something against children." A woman in Minneapolis gave them the idea of walking with a mule, not only to carry Ihcir provisions and call at- tention to their project, but also to ward off people think- ing they were hitchhikers. In Ankara, Turkey, they ac- quired a wagon for the mule to puli, supplied by Turkish tourist officials. American air force officers provided them a cover for the wagon so they would have shelter when they stopped to eat or sleep, to do it yourself." About six o'clock the night of Oct. 22. Dave suggested they pull the wagon off the road for the night. They were cooking dinner in the wagon when the dog began barking. "John said there were six Afghans walking down the Dave recalls, "and I said 'Watch 'cm.' finished eating, and were sitting there talking when we saw head- lights up the road quite a ways, and I said 'It's proba- bly a truck broken down.' 9 or I looked out a little peekhole and the truck had parked about 200 feet from the wagon, and I 'It must be the same truck in trouble Three guys got out and looked under the hood. "Then John said the same six Afghans were coming back. I had a shotgun they bad given us in Ankara for the wolves the winter before and I loaded it. "When the six Afghans got by the truck, they seemed to rush and grab the driver and his helper and I said 'I think they're robbing the truck.' They took the driver across the road and I asked John if 1 should jump out ano1 up in the air, and he said 'No. you're not in the United As five of the men came toward the wagon, Dave argued with his brother over whether to shoot first, and after shouting the Afghan word for "Go fired the gun in the air. ('They jumped back and spited he said. "A shot was don't know why, I think it was a signal shot, and I said we should get under the wagon but John said no, we should walk up the mountain." But before they could do ei- ther, more shots rang out and both brothers were wounded. The bandits yanked Dave's wrist watch and belt off, and threw a mattress over him. wi It could save you from "Mm SIMPSONS bears SHOPLIRiNG IS STEALING ond If you o rnc'c- 1 6 cr over or a female IS or ever, and charged c> o-Jjit if i of: ccjiJ You'll be fingerprinted, You'll hcvo a cr'rriirol record, one of life! value, it ecu you 'o years time in pritcn i5C.O p'.t for Up fO 1 0 If you are odulf you'll be dealt with ir. court.
