Both of the new religious com- munities sent members here to see first-hand how local set- tlements operate. Both were organized by ministers who broke away from other churches to take up the Hutterite life. The North American Hutter- ites comprise people liv- ing in 200 colonies throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Al- berta, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. There are about Hutter- ites in Alberta. Mr. Wurz said the colonies forming in Japan and the Phil- ippines may be the first of their kind in those countries. In Luzon in the Philippines, Francisco Arreola, a man who had belonged to many churches, found Mr. Wurz's name in a yearbook published by the Men- nonite Society and came to the colony south of Coaldale, for a 21-day visit. "In tile Philippines, they want- ed to become Hutterites and live the way we do. That's why he came in Canada to see with his own eyes the way we said the Hutterite elder. Back in the Philippines, Mr. Arreola wrote to Mr. Wurz re- lating his efforts to implement the Hutterite way of life and dispel mistaken notions that it was communism. "The Philippine people are a democratic people and he had to explain to them that it dif- fered from communism in Rus- sia and China." said Mr. Wurz. The main difference is that the Hutterites follow the teach- ings of Jesus, while commun- ism is anti religious. Of Mr. Arreola's beliefs, Mr. Wurz said "he is very religi- ous. He was with the Catholics for a while and then the Sev- enth-day Adventists before he Your humble servant! Mr. Arreola wrote that he had purchased 15 acres of fruit growing farm land and had moved in September with about a dozen fellow believers out to the farm. How large the Philippine com- mune will grow will depend pri- marily on economics, said Mr. Wurz. In Japan the new Hutterite community is headed by 74- year-old Isomi Izeki, an ordain- ed minister with the United Church there for 30 years. In letters to Mr. Wurz, he disclosed ttiat he had searched for 15 years for a communal life of the Hutterite type. Mr. Wurz believes Mr. Izeki may have heard of (he Hutter- ites in Canada from Japanese friends in Raymond, where Mr. Wurz spoke about his reli- gion at a meeting. The Japanese minister wrote that, he was inspired by a wood- en figure of Jesus he saw in 1952 at an art exhibition in Tokyo and resolved to give up material possessions to follow a simple life of devotion. Mr. Izeki said he read of the Kibbutz life in Israel and went there in 1965, but was disap- pointed to find the Israeli com- munal farms "a national and cultural community, not the community in the Bible."
