Saturday, December 21, 1974 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD 17 Chico and the man TV show Young actor hits stardom By DICK KLEINER HOLLYWOOD (NEA) He's only 20 years old and already a major star. And he promises that it won't go to his head. His name is Freddie Prinze and he's the co-star, with Jack Albertson, of NBC's solid new hit, Chico and the Man. This Jimmie Komach created series has survived a lot of flak, over its Mexican American theme, and gone on to high enough ratings to assure that it will survive the brouhaha. Albertson has been there so he can take the new thrust of fame in his stride. But it's all brand, sparkling new to Prinze. But he, too, will probably be able to cope, judging from his answer to the question of how he's enjoying his first brush with fame and fortune. "I love he said, and you get the impression that he would have jumped up and down and clapped his hands, except he was seated at the time. Not only does he love it but he's smart enough to realize how potentially fleeting a phenomenon it is And he intends to capitalize on it while he's got it BFC FUTURE PLASS "I want to enough money in the next four or five he says, "so (hat, by the time I'm 24 or 25, I'll be able to do only what I want to do Maybe at that time I'll decide I want to write or to produce or to do some serious acting. I'm not surt now By then I'll know and I'll be able to do it. "I'm going to go out and capitalize on my Chico success for a while. I'm right now negotiating a Las Vegas contract. An act? I've had the act ready for years." All this talk of money and career and offers must be heady stuff to the kid from New York It's all very new and he's come up the ladder from nothing and nowhere. His mother, a Puerto Rican, met his father, a Hungarian Jew, in the factory where they both were working. "I do a Freddie says, "that my parents met in the subway, trying to pick each other's pockets. But that's not true. The truth is they met in the factory. My father is a tool and die maker, my mother just a factory worker. My father still works but now I won't let my mother work any more." FAT KID He grew up in the big city j and'all he remembers of his school years was trying to be funny. "I was the little fat he says. "I couldn't run and I couldn't fight, but I could make people laugh. Very often the teacher would kick me out of class I was being disrup- tive, they would say so I'd go around and look in the win- dow, making funny faces He first came to California to do Chico and the Man At first he didn't like it here. Now he does. In fact, now he hates New York, and says, "I just go back once in a while to see my folks and practice be- ing paranoid CROP THREATENED BUENOS AIRES (AP) A year-long drought is threaten- ing Argentina's wheat, and ex- perts say the 1974-1975 crop being harvested could be a severe disappointment.
