Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - December 20, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 12 THE LETHDRIDOE HERALD Friday, December 20, 1974 million sought for pipeline article CBC brass startled at story cost OTTAWA (CP) The northern service of the CBC, which provides the only radio service across the Arctic, has startled headquarters brass here with a request for million for a single news story But officials of the northern service appear convinced that they can persuade the corpor- ation that the money will be well spent. The news story is the pipeline hearings to start in the North in March. Canadian Arctic Gas Pipelines Ltd. is seeking a right-of-way through the North for a line which would bring natural gas from Alaska and the Mackenzie Delta to the energy starved south. CBC broadcasters in the North want to keep informed the more than Indians and Eskimos whose way of life could be highly affected if the pipeline is built. To do it, they want to hire broadcasters to prepare daily reports of the hearings by Mr. NOTICE ANGLO STEREO PHOTO 419-5th Streets. iS NOT ASSOCIATED with Acme Merchandise Distributors or any other firm. Berger in the Es- kimo, Slavey, Dogrib, Chpew- yan, Hareskin and Louchexu languages Native groups, including the Northwest Territories Indian Brotherhood and the Com- mittee for the Original Entitlement, will be represented at the hearings. Their position will be that no major development, such as the pipeline, should go ahead until native land claims are settled. Mr. Justice Berger is keen on the CBC keeping the native people informed on what goes on at his hearings as much as possible. The judge, who also will hold hearings in major centres such as Yellowknife, Inuvik and Whitehorse, also plans to visit more than 20 small, isolated communities which lie along the Mackenzie Valley route of the pipeline. Getting out one news report, let alone six, will require large amounts of money. The northern service wants to broadcast reports one hour a day while the hearings go on. It also wants to package television reports which would be sent to' Edmonton and then relayed back to northern viewers by com- munications satellite.
