D. Blues. Drink, Drank, Drunk was produced originally for PBS by WQED TV, Pitt- sburgh, with a grant from the 3M Company. "In funding specials like V.D. Blues and Drink, Drank, Drunk we hope to help society confront some of the issues affecting gays A. F. Jacobson, ex- Skaters on camera CBC-TV sports producer Bill Sheehan, has put together one of the finest skating shows over telecast on the network. It is called A Skating Fan- tasy, and is scheduled for to p.m. on Christ- mas Day. The program, which will be videotaped at Toronto's City Hall outdoor rink, boasts a number of well known Canadian per- formers. Among the expected stars are Toller Cran- ston, considered to be the world's best free skater; Lynn Nightingale, the 17 year old Ottawa girl who won top honors in this year's Canadian cham- pionships; and Sandra and Val Bezic, who competed in their fifth world corn- petition last March. To back them up Sheehan has gathered together 150 young skaters from the Toronto area Bill has a number of sur- prise entries standing in the wings, just in case any of the top skaters are un- able to make it. RECEIVES AWARD The MacDowell Colony Medal for dancing has been awarded to Martha Graham this year. ecutive vice president and general manager of 3M Canada Ltd. "It is one way to express our dependence on and concern for people not just our employees and customers, but those who are our neighbors in com- munities around the world." Like its predecessor V. D. Blues, Drink, Drank, Drunk not only focuses on a significant social illness, but also offers avenues to help to those directly and indirectly involved. A recent estimate puts the number of alcoholics in Canada at nearly one million. But these alcoholics profoundly influence the lives of some four million ethers Canadians relatives, employers, co workers and so on and it is at these innocent victims of the disease of alcoholism that the telecast is par- ticularly aimed. A considerable amount of the program's one hour running time is devoted to showing the relatives and associates of the alcoholic how best to cope with the problem drinker in their lives to restore nor- malcy to their daily routine and, hopefully, to that of the alcoholic as well. The program juxtaposes comedy, drama, music and documentary to provide in- formation and advice about the contemporary scourge of alcoholism to the view- ing audience. Following its showing on PBS stations through the U.S. in late October, the telecast was hailed by critics, the general public and various organizations that try to combat alcoholism. The CBC currently is consulting with various Canadian organizations (including Al Anon, which is designed specifically to assist those whose lives are affected by living with an alcoholic) to try to en- sure avenues of assistance are made known to the millions of Canadians whose lives are intimately influenced by the stigma of alcoholism. Host Carol Burnett sets the candid tone for the program when she confides to the viewing audience that her own parents both died of alcoholism at age 46. In addition to the award winning comedienne, the telecast features the talents of actors E. G. Marshall and Larry Blyden; the Emmy Award winning comedy team of Renee Taylor and Joe Bologna; Blues singer Linda Hopkins; and Morgan Freeman (The Electric Company's 'easy reader') who pops in and out during the hour to offer some 'fast facts' about alcoholism; and others. The program was developed in consultation with several organizations designed to combat alcoholism, including the aforementioned Al Anon.
