MONDAY DEC. 21 Your birthday today: This is a year of many surprises, TORONTO (CP) A call the federal Food and Drug Di- rectorate for a lower limit of estrogen in birth-control pills has brought disagreement from the Canadian Medical Associa- tion. The association says there is no firm evidence that pills con- taining 80 micrograms of estro- gen carry a greater risk of blood clotting than 50-micro- gram pills. In a supplement to be distrib- uted with the Dec. 19 issue of the Journal of the Canadian Medical Association, the CM A praises the report but disagrees with two recommendations and presentation of some of the ma- terial. The directorate set up the special committee on oral con- traceptives last January after reports were received on blood clotting in women taking the pill. The committee report was tabled in the Commons Dec. 9 by Health Minister John Munro. It said that whenever possible the 50-microgram pill should be used. The report of a CMA commit- tee set lo review the directorate report said this should read "whenever indicated." because the 80-microgram pill may be medically preferable. The re- port says the choice of pill should be. at the discretion of each patient's doctor. GOREN ON BRIDGE BY CHARLES H. GOREN la Itrai Br TM clilcw Tiltowl WEEKLY BRIDGE QUIZ Q.
