Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - December 18, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta The Lcthbridge Herald FIFTH SECTION Lethbridge, Alberta, Wednesday, December 18, 1974 PAGES 41-56 Mackenzie King dominated Canadian scene for quarter century THE CANADIAN PRESS One hundred years ago, on Dec. 17, 1874, in Berlin, Ont., now Kitchener, William Lyon Mackenzie King was born, later to dominate federal poli- tics through the second quar- ter of this century as prime minister for almost 22 years in all between 1921 and 1948. To mark the 100th birthday, a Mackenzie King colloquium is being held near his birth- place at University of Water- loo. Scholars and former col- leagues have been assigned to iooK anew at the life and times of the puzzling leader and the political legacy he left on his death at age 75 July They offer a cross-hatch of views about the bland-looking, rotund bachelor with the somewhat whiney voice who ran the Liberal party cannily and the country carefully while admiring his firebrand grandfather, the 1837 revolu- tionary William Lyon Mack- enzie, the se- cret practice of spiritualism- worshipping his mother. A bare tracing of Mack- enzie King's career takes him through Toronto, Chicago and Harvard universities in the 1890s and to Ottawa in 1900 to set up a new department of labor, with him as deputy minister. He was elected MP in 1908 for Waterloo later served for York North in On- tario, Prince in Prince Ed- ward Island; Prince Albert in Saskatchewan, and Glengarry in became labor minister under. Sir Wilfrid Laurier. He lost with Laurier in 1911 and subsequently stuck with his leader in opposition to conscription for service in the First World War when the Liberal party split on that issue. Mackenzie King was chosen Liberal leader in 1919 follow- ing Laurier's death and be- came prime minister Dec. 29, 1921. But for a three-month break in 1926 when Arthur Meighen governed and for five years 1930-35 under R. B. Bennett, he held power until he handed over to Louis St. Laurent in November, 1948. Crises came and went in the King years, but the most the country mainly on French-English the con- scription debate of the Second World War. After assuring Quebec there would be no enforced service overseas, the King govern- ment held a 1942 plebiscite on the issue which showed 72 per cent opposed in Quebec, but 80 per cent in favor in the rest of the country. Following two years of stalling, but under increasing pressure for conscription from inside and outside the government, King finally yielded in a manner that held the government and the Lib- eral party together-unlike the situation in the First World holding the loyalty of the Quebec wing of the party. Views from the Mac- kenzie King era: left, as a child in 1876; with his par- ents, John and Isabel Grace King, in 1911, be- low; and with Allied lead- ers Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Governor-General Ath- lone at Quebec City dur- ing Second World War, bottom.
