Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - December 17, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD - FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1971 Doc returns to Gunsmoke LOS ANGELES - Milburn Stone, 67, who plays the role �jf Doc Adams on Gunsmoke, bas returned to work in the series after his convalescence from (^)aa-chest siirgery. Stone vi-as stricken in January with his third heart attack in less than three years. He underspent surgery at the University of Alabama Medical Ointer in Birmin^am. Stone returned to his home in the San Fernando VaUey some weeks after the operation to complete his convalescence. During his absence New York actor Pat Hingle filled in for him in the role of Dr. John Chapman in sis episodes of Gunsmoke this season. Stone, who has played the role of Doc since the series came to television 16 years ago, said, "I'm just delighted to be back to work, and I feel fine." In the series appearing on CBC-TV on Sundays at 9 p.m. (in color), Elizabeth R is portrayed by the Academy Award-winning English actress Glen-da Jackson. Shadow in the Sun will be telecast on the net\TOrk Sunday, Dec. 19, 9-10:30 p.m. Elizabeth has broken off relations with France, because of the massaci-e of thousands of Huguenots in Paris on St. Bartholomew's Eve. Meanwhile, with the death of the Spanish leader in the Netherlands, France means to step in and rout the Spaniards. But to retain a balance of power in Europe, an alliance with England is needed. Simier, Alencon's agent, comes to England to negotiate tlie marriage. Leicester, still a confidant of the Queen, is against Alencon's suit, even though England needs an heir to the throne. Leicester, himself, has been secretly married. Despite his disapproval, Alencon comes to England and the ludicrous courtship begins. With public opuiion set agauist the marriage, Alencon being a Catholic prince, and with the council divided, there is some delay. Alencon, meanwhile, is offered the Dutch cro\wi and the political alliance takes on added importance.. Both England and France agree to it, but France insists that the alliance must be ratified by the marriage of Elizabeth to Alencon. Leicester again voices his objection, and Elizabeth leams from Simier that he (Leicester) has married. The Queen orders Leicester to the Tower, but �Suiasax Inteaicedes and she asks for his help to extricate her from the marriage commitment to Alencon. The French prince, though angry, allows himself to be bought off for 60,000 English pounds. He returns to the Netherlands.
