The latest story, in today's tabloid Daily Mirror, says the 49-year-old legislator was un- der Secret Service sur- veillance in connection with his service as minister of posts and tele- communications in the late 1960s. The newspaper says Stone- house's complex business interests included the sale of defence equipment and security printings such as banknotes. It also says Prime Minister Harold Wilson has received a five-page dossier on Stonehouse. There was no official com- ment on the report. Other newspapers carried reports Stonehouse's life was insured for Some hinted at a connection between his disappearance and organized crime Stonehouse's wife, Barbara, 45. issued a statement saying she took out a number of pol- icies on her husband's life this year because she was worried that he was undennsured. PROTECTED HERSELF She said Stonehouse travell- ed extensively overseas on business and was aware "that it was my desire to make my own insurance arrangements to protect myself and our family in the event of his death." The Daily Mail says Mrs. Stonehouse took out three pol- icies totalling between July and September. Stonehouse was in Miami Beach on unspecified business when he disappeared It was thought at first that he drowned, but Florida police have not recovered his body. One of his colleagues in the Hotlse of Commons, Laborite William Malloy, has said publicly he believes Stonehouse was killed by the Mafia. London newspapers have given prominence to reports that a body was found encased in concrete in a warehouse near Fort Lauderdale, Fla., five days after Stonehouse dis- appeared. The body also has disappeared.
