Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - December 15, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta .Wednesday, December 15, 1971 THE tETHBRIDGEHHALD 15 today's FUNNY SUNSHINE is FREE FOR THE BASWNG tl-ZO Youth Column Diploma process too slow KINGSTON, Ont. (CP) University students liave often been accused of watching the clock during lectures but uni- versity officials here put the slop-watch on the students. The students were not on how much time they wasted in class-but on how long it took them to pick up their diplomas. The Queen's University se- nate was told recently that it takes an average of 11 sec- onds to pick up a diploma which bears witness to a mini- mum of three years of study. But some officials feel the convocation process could be speeded up. Prof. S. S. Lazier of Queen's faculty of engineering said eliminating applause might save four seconds for each graduating student. Another way to cut seconds would be to send students up in pairs to receive their diplomas. Prof. Lazier said he counted, in seconds, how long it took to confer degrees last spring on 1.445 students. The faculty of education stu- dents won the race across the platform. They were cleared term the profes- sor used was 7.5 seconds on the average. BA graduates averaged a litlle under 10 seconds while BA honors and B.Sc. gradu- ates moved at a more stately seconds. Law students trailed through in 13 seconds and medical graduates took an av- erage of 15.4 seconds. Prof. Lazier, who estimated 1.750 graduates will appear at the 1972 convocations, said a dual laureation procedure without applause would com- press crowning of 350 students into 45 minutes. Last spring, it took 40 min- utes for the ceremony for 235 BA students.
