Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - December 14, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Saturday, December 14, 1974 THE LETMBHIUUC ntnAi-u New festival director to be keenly watched OTTAWA (CP) All eyes and ears will be turned to Stratford, Ont., next summer to see what Robin Phillips does with the long running and highly successful Strat- ford Festival Phillips gained a whiz-kid reputation in English theatre before his appointment last summer to succeed Jean Gascon as artistic director of the festival dedicated to the works of William Shakespeare and other prominent playwrights. His appointment sparked controversy because no Cana- dian theatre director seemed ready or willing to take on the job of heading the country's oldest and biggest professional theatre But fears of what Phillips might do to the festival faded with the attractiveness of his initial plans. He recruited directors, ac- tors and other artists from regional professional theatres across the country to serve as his associates at Stratford, and plans to make the Avon Theatre and the Third Stage equal in prestige with the mam Festival Theatre on the banks of the Avon River. Phillips' first two produc- tions, Shakespeare's Two Gentlemen of Verona and Comedy of Errors, start a national tour in Winnipeg in February before moving to the Avon Theatre for the summer. In the Stratford Festival, opening in June, other Shakespeare works to be seen are Measure for Measure and Twelfth Night.
