Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - December 13, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Friday, 13, 1974 THE LETHBRIDGC HERALD 23 Church charges filed against Anglican pastor CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) A lay official said this week that church charges have been filed against an Episcopal (Anglican) pastor who per- mitted women priests to per-' form the sacraments in his church. WYONNEODNEY Auxiliary elects officers The Ladies' Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion has re elected Wyonne Odney to serve as president for the 1975 term Other officers include Hazel Black, first vice president, Marilyn Christiansen, second vice president; Emma Unterseher, treasurer; and Eleanora Munroe, secretary Members of the executive are Emma Hackett, Florence Wakelin, Ethel Styner, Mary Ann Hutton, Ruth Thomsen and Wyn Parkinson. Sergeant at arms is Eileen Perry. Cleveland lawyer Sterling Newell said the charges filed with the standing committee of the Ohio Episcopal diocese accuse Rev. Peter Beebe of violation of his ordination vows and various canons of the church. Mr. Beebe, 29, is rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Oberlin, Ohio. Mr. Newell said the charges stem from services at Christ Episcopal during which two women priests celebrated the Eucharist. "There are no canons that authorize the ordination of women to the Mr. Newell said. "This has been debated in the highest bodies of the church, and the interpretation of general conference and the house of bishops is that it is not provid- ed in the canons that women can be ordained as priests." Rev. Carter Heyward, 29, of New York, and Rev. Allison Cheek, 47, of Washington, were among 11 women ordain- ed as Episcopal priests July 29 in Philadelphia. Roster of qualified women compiled as national project A roster of qualified women, listing names of women across Canada whose experience would make them suitable for ap- pointment to boards and commissions, will be compiled by the Canadian Federation of University Women as its national pro- ject for International Women's Year The roster will be used initially to recommend womtn for apppointment at the federal level, later it could be exparjed to serve other agencies. "We are seeking women who have a potential for communi- ty and public said Ruth Bell, national president of CFUW. in a news release. "We do not regard putting a woman's name on the roster as an acknowledgement of past achievements, but rather as an encouragement for future ac- tivity."
