Along with the visual symbol, the CBC introduced a new sound symbol for radio use, composed by Francois Morel of Montreal. The exploding C was design- ed by Burton Kramer and Allan Fleming of Toronto, creators of the snake like CN logotype used by Canadian National Railways. CBC President Laurent Picard said in a statement the state owned broadcasting system needed new symbols both sound and visual to identify all its facets, including English and French AM, FM, and TV networks and its Northern and inter- national services. "The over all program is designed to establish and maintain a clear and consistent identity for the CBC everywhere and in everything it he said. The visual symbol was to be first used before the late evening English and French television news Mon- day. The sound iden- tification was to be used on the French radio networks Monday night, and on the English networks Tuesday mor- ning. The symbol centres on the letter C, sur- rounded by segments of the letter expanding in all directions. When reproduced in color, the C which Mr. Picard said stands for Canada, expanding in every direction will be red and the segments will spread out through tones of orange to yellow, all on a blue background. The search for and adoption of the symbols took about two years-. The visual symbol was approved in January, and since then the CBC has been working towards its introduction with as little disruption of operations and ser- vices as possible, the CBC said. Pefore they were seen or heard on the networks, the symbols were introduced by CBC executives at an Ottawa reception.
