For several days it has become increasingly difficult to purchase a bicycle despite the fact France is one of the world's major bicycle produc- ers. Last the country pro- duced two million bicycles and this year the number is I expected to reach 2.3 million. More than 50 per cent of production goes to export and this percentage is expected to increase this year due to the oil shortage in other European countries. Holland and Western Ger- where Sunday driving has been are the big- gest European buyers of French bicycles. Last year the Germans and the Dutch bought and bicycles ranking third and fourth among France's principal clients. The Americans ranked first with the purchase of bicycles and Canadians se- cond with FRENCH BUYING Increased orders from other European countries are not the sole cause of the shortage. The French fear- ing they will be next to ex- perience a ban on Sunday are buying heavily. For several weeks Prime Minister Pierre Messmer has tried to con- vince the people his having obtained guarantees from the Arab oil- producing countries that oil deliveries to France will con- does not intend to im- pose rationing. Mr. Messmer has also told the people should the guarantees be current reserves would per- mit the country to carry on for 100 days. He has asked people to use public transit and cut down on home heating. Observers and how- say they feel gasoline rationing and a ban on Sunday driving was announced at the latest by Jan. 15 should the energy crisis not end soon. Nearly 75 per cent of France's oil comes from the Arab countries. The Arabs have agreed to continue supplying the oil but at a rate based on the country's average consumption for the first nine months of the year.
