Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - December 9, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta _ THE lETHBRITCS HERALD - Wednesday, December 9, 1970 Fierce power struggle in Bombay By RAM SUXDAR CP Correspondent BOMBAY ((CP) - This metropolis of more than five million people is currently witnessing a fierce struggle for power between Communists and Fascists. Both the pro-Moscow and pro-Peking wings of the Communist party have joined hands in a rare exhibition of solidarity to give battle to the Shiv Sena, a militant right-wing party listed by the Indian government as a Fascist group. The city's industrial districts have been witnessing a series of violent clashes between the two groups. Shiv Sena volunteers have raided Communist party offices and beaten up Red workers. The homes of some of the Reds have also been ransacked. On a recent night a gang of young Fascists stormed the house of Krishna Desai, a member of the provincial legislature, dragged him out and speared him to death. More than 20 people have been arrested in this case and the Bombay government has appointed a special officer to head the investigations. Within days of the Desai slaying a Shiv Sena volunteer was stabbed to death in a busy district. The assailant escaped but Bal Thackeray, the Fascists' boss, claims the murder was committed by Communists. BREAKS UP RALLIES Thackeray, 42, says he is determined to "liquidate" the Communists. He has called upon his followers to break up Red rallies. For the first time in almost 30 years the Indian Communist party is deeply worried about losing its hold over Bombay's working class. Shri-pad Dange, its general secretary, has called . upon the city's workers to "unite and foil the treacherous game of tl n Fascists who are acting as the agents of Western imperialists." But each passing day throws up fresh evidence that Bal Thackeray is dividing the workers with his fiery eloquence and destructive tactics. A recent Shiv Sena rally was attended by 50,000 textile workers. The Fascists have also launched a recruitment drive in the city's slum areas. According to one estimate, the Shiv Sena has a volunteer force of more than 20,000 young men and women. In the last elections to the city legislature the Fascists won one-third of the 140 seats. Bal Thackeray says that in the next poll "not a single Red will be returned to the legislature." The Communists are particularly alarmed by the fact that Thackeray has an increasing appeal for youth. Many of the Shiv Sena followers are teen-agers. Police say that even school children take part in Fascist attacks on Red offices. A local political writer estimates that the Reds have lost more than 200,000 out of their million followers in the industrial and slum areas to the Fascists. Thackeray argues that his right-wing philosophy appeals to workers because it is "modern and pragmatic." "I tell the poor people of Bombay that their salvation will come when they drive out the Communists who have been exploiting them at the behest of Moscow and Peking," he told a mass rally. The 17th edition of the Guinness Book of Records has decided that the Amazon River is longer than the Nile. CINDER CENTRE VILLAGE MALL DISTINCTIVE GIFT GIVING CANDLES AND ^? s? it it 5?
