The Public School Board has had a hard time providing accommodation for the fast increasing rJkool population. During the year to provide for tho overflow two .small chools have been built, one in Xorth Word and tho other on Courtlnnd St. Their greatest work, ho^iTcver, has been t\M building of tho splendid new Pentra) ^chopl, which promises to be tho finest public school building in Wc^rn Canada. Besides providing EChool accommodation, the board has continued its policy of engaging only the beet teachers and of equipping them with everything necespery for the furtherance of their work. Side Ufshtt ACCIDENTS ON RAILWAYS The report of the Interstate commerce conunlssi on concerning railway accidents in the United States shows that during the year ending June 30, 1908, there were 3,764 pebple killed and 68,089 Injured. Of these 406 killed and 12,645 injured were passengers; esnploj-es, 3,-358 killed and 56,344 injured. There waa a gratifying decrease from the previous year, when 647 passengers and 4,398 employees were killed and 13.979 passengers and 62,680 employees were Injured, making a total of S.OOp killed and 76,280 Injured. A well known newspaper writer speaks of these figures as appalling, especially when tiiey are compared with similar reports from foreign countries. Tho total number of passengers killed in England last year was only 120 nnd 2.666 were injured, while tho number of ralhvoy employees killed was 454 and the number of injured 5,577. The annual average for the last ten years In England has been 1,160 killed and 6,765 Injured. This was an average of one passenger killed out of 70,000,000 travelling, and one for every 1,800,000 was injured. The annual average of acci-d�nt.s in the United Kingdom for tho last thirty years has been one passenger killed for every 40,-300,000 travelling and one Injured for 1.300,000 travelling; so that tho risk is very much less than formerly, and is diminishing every year. In 19q6, there was a very bad record in England, because of two terrible ac-! cldents-one of them to a steamship train loaded with American.s-and tho total for that year was lifty-eight pus sengers killed and 631 injured. The total nmnber af pas.simgors killed by accidents to trains in Groat Britain year was only eighteea, and the number injured was 554, while in tho United States 105 pass-TOgers were killed in train accidents and 7.734 were injured. The greatest slaughter was in collisions which seldom occur in England. Having tor several years been a niombet of the Vancouver School Board and of the McQill University Board, Mr, Dougan ia much intorestod in educational mattfira and spent some spare time visiting the Central School yesterday afternoon. "From the Kindergarten, which is in skilful atid painsiAking hands to the high school departments which are doing as good work as any etty schoob, said Mr, Dougan, "the school ranks with those of any city in Western Canada." The school went through it,9 Are drill, being out in tho yard and lined up in fifty-six seconds. Mr. Dougan believes in less speed and more ajkfoty ill connection with fire drills. Ho considered the drill yesterday as very successful. The visitor was much pleased with the new school. "Vancouver," he siiid, "hn.s spent a million and a half in ."cliools but your school has every quipment wo have. There is plenty o{ air and floor space and the cloak rooms are splendidly arranged from a fiunitary standpoint. Tho auditorium which is a part of tho best schools now is capacious and accessible.
