Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - December 7, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta oaiuroay, umvmmomr i, me. icirmmuuc ncnAuu No claim of healing offered says Scientology authority EDMONTON (CP) Scientology is a religion that deals with spiritual salvation and offers no claim of healing, Harvey Sctamiedeke of Calgary, assistant guardian for the churches of in Alberta, says. Commenting on statements by Dr. David Cook, a Universi- ty of Alberta professor, which linked Scientology with medical quackery, Mr. Schmiedeke said in a prepared statement that it is inaccurate to include Scientology in the area of quackery. Dr. Cook, a pharmacologist, told a meeting of senior citizens Nov. 26 that medical quackery was more common to- day than ever before. He said some doctors, as well as patients, are guilty of believing in remedies for which there is no sound evidence. Dr. Cook included megavitamins, herbal medications, patent medicine and Scientology in his indictment. Mr. Schmiedeke said a sign prominently placed in every Church of Scientology reads. "If you have come here to be cured of a physical illness, see the registrar and so inform her so that she can arrange for a competent medical examination and treatment and for dianetic counselling while under the care of a doctor. When you are physically well, you can begin Scien- tology counselling on your road to total freedom." Dianetics, Mr. Schmiedeke said, is a sub-study of Scien- tology which has been adopted by some members of the medical profession as a supplement to competent medical care, specifically for dealing with the problem of psychosomatic or spiritually induced illnesses. He said some medical practitioners who have made use of dianetic technology developed by L. Ron Hubbard, an American philosopher, writer and engineer who is recognized as the founder of Scientology, have proven its workability and have formed the dianetic information group. Mr. Schmiedeke said the group, of which Dr. Kathleen Kerr of Toronto is Canadian president, yesterday presented a selec- tion of articles on dianetics by members of the medical profes- sion to the Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons. The ar- ticles were presented to the college by Dr. E. E. Transport Minister Bob Strachan said elimination of Motor Vehicle Branch road tests for driver training graduates is a step to reduce long waiting periods for peo- ple seeking driver ex- aminations. He said there has been a "surge" in the number of peo- ple applying for drivers' licences and "public in- convenience has been par- ticularly acute." "For that reason this tem- porary measure is being in- stituted to expedite licensing of drivers until additional MVB staff is he said. Suspension of the separate government road tests for driver training school graduates will last until April 30 but road tests will be re- quired by all other applicants. Mr Strachan said the program will be monitored closely to ensure licensing standards do not suffer, and therefore some driving school graduates, chosen at random. This cheque is Canchek.
