34 THE LETHSRIDQE HERALD Saturday, December 7, 1974 King's future on line Sunday NEW YORK TIMES "What are we going to do with the said a cafe owner, as he served tiny cups of turkish coffee. "We don't need him. He's not necessary. If I vote for him now, my children will live under him. I can't vote for someone who will rule my children." This Sunday, Greeks will decide in a national referen- dum whether to restore King Constantine to the throne or establish a republic. In parliamentary elections last month, Piraeus gave the New Democracy party of Premier Constantine Caramanlis almost exactly the same ma- jority he received nationwide. Now, most people in this in- dustrial port city seem to agree with the cafe owner: they don't think they need a king. Constantine, who is 34 years old, inherited the throne in 1964. In April of 1967 the democratic government here was overthrown by a coup d'etat. Eight months later the king tried to start a counter- coup, but when it failed he fled to Italy. In recent years he has been living near London with his wife, a Danish princess, and their three children. The monarchy was abolish- ed in a referendum last year, but the balloting was widely regarded as illegal. After the junta collapsed during the Cyprus crisis last July, a new vote was called to settle the issue. The king still commands significant support in a country where tradition colors AALBORG AKVAVIT AALBORG many areas of life. "We've always been said a shopper, her arms laden with packages. "From the time we were small children, my parents always talked about the king." An old woman added: "The title, the grandeur it's nice. We used to watch him go into the palace, and we'd applaud and shout, long live the king." A clerk in a record store defended the monarchy as a bulwark against communism. "Before they could come to he explained, "they would have to overthrow the king." Almost billion in the bonds were sold. Finance Minister John Turner has told the Commons mis- cellaneous estimates committee that the record sale, which was cut off Nov. 15, had far outnumbered available certificates. "We just ran out of he told Gaston Clermont Mr. Clermont had said a large number of people who had purchased the bonds had not received cer- tificates. Mr. Turner assured him that interest will be paid from Nov. 1, not from the date cer- tificates are received. Marcel Lambert West) asked the minister if there would be any sur- prises when final es- timates are issued March 31, 1975, the end of the fiscal year. The committee was studying the latest government supple- mentary estimates that raised total forecast ex- penditures for the 1974- 75 fiscal year to almost billion. Mr. Turner said he doesn't foresee any further increases. Mr. Lambert dis- agreed and said govern- ment spending would hit between and billion before the end of next March. The committee also cancelled two further meetings with the health and transport department. The time limit placed on the committee by Parliament for study of the supplementary esti- mates has expired. THANK YOU!
