Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - December 6, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta Probe sought on gov't native housing policy 1973 THE LETHBRIDQC HERALD OTTAWA Parlia- ment has been -asked by a Commons committee to investigate government social and native housing policy and the firing of Walter a policy planner with the Central Mortgage and Hous- ing Corp. With Progressive Con- servatives and New Democrats banding a motion requesting the in- quiry through the Commons miscellaneous es- timates committee. Liberal members were opposed. Ed Broadbent who proposed the said after the committee meeting that he thinks the proposal has a chance of winn- ing Commons approval. William CMHC repeated that he fired Mr. Rudnicki because he showed a draft cabinet docu- ment to the native Council of Canada. Mr. Rud- headed a policy group which was preparing a native housing policy. He denied that he had been influenced by Urban Affairs Minister Ron Basford in any way in dismissing Mr. Rud- nicki. Mr. Rudnicki said recently that at no time was the docu- ment classed confidential but this was denied by Mr. Teron. Mr. Rudnicki said he had dis- cussed a draft policy with members of the Native Coun- cil after Mr. Basford had promised Metis leaders they would be consulted in prepar- ing the policy. Frank Oberle George-Peace suggested Mr. Basford had ordered the firing. In an inter- view later he said he has evidence the minister told Mr. Teron he would have to fire Mr. Rudnicki or lose his job. Mr. Teron said the min- ister made no attempt to in- fluence him. Mr. Basford also said he left the matter entire- ly in Mr. Teron's hands. The company was reacting to Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed's suggestion that eastern gas utilities which now buy gas solely from TransCanada PipeLines Ltd. be forced to bid competitively to buy directly from Alberta producers. Other utilities took a wait- and-see attitude.
