HERALD 23 Livestock market report Lcthbridge Livestock Sales Monday to Friday: 720 cattle; 450 calves; hogs; 189 lambs. Same period last week: 551 cattle; 454 calves; hogs; 401 lambs. Same week 1969: 893 cattle; 664 calves; hogs; 150 lambs. SUMMARY Slaughter market uneven. Butcher steers closed 25 cents higher than last week. Heifers steady. Cows 50 cents lower. Re- placement cattle steady. Good stock calves sold strong, com- mon kinds barely steady to low- er. Slaughter steers opened strong with handyweight choice kinds to 30.70. As the week pro- gressed part of the early week steers closed at a practical top of 30.25. Steers over Ibs. and overfinished steers were discounted 1.00 to 2.00 per cwt. Slaughter cows opened steady but met an indifferent demand at the close to sell 50 cents low- er. Bulls steady. Butcher heif- ers were scarce but steady. Feeder steers and heifers steady. Good quality stock calves sold readily at strong prices. Buyers were more selec- tive on the lower grade calves with prices barely steady to 1.00 lower. SLAUGHTER CATTLE Steers: choice 29.50 to 30.25, good 28.50 to 29.50, medium 27.75 to 28.50. Heifers: choice 28 to 20.60, good 27.25 to 28, medium 25 to 27. Cows: good 19.50 to 20.50, me- dium 18.50 to 19.50, earners and cutters 15 to 18. Bulls: Good 22.50 to 23.50. REPLACEMENT CATTLE AND CALVES Good heavy feeder steers over 900 Ibs. 30 to 31.50. There were only 318 head of beef cattle exported to the United States last week, bnng- ng the locate total to head compared with during the same period of a war ago. Supplies of cattle at public markets were below last week and trading on most classes and grades of butchers con- tinued under pressure. Steer prices varied from 50 cents ligher to lower, and heifers rom 50 cents higher to 50 cents lower for the week. Cows and bulls were steady at lower. Feeder cattle and stock calves met a good de- mand at steady prices, veal and butcher calves were main- ly unchanged. Hog prices were ower at all centres and good arnbs varied from 50 cents ligher to as much as lower. Choice 30.50 to 31.75; Toronto 31 to 32; Win- nipeg 29.50 to 30.50; Saskatoon 2850 to 29.75; Edmonton 29.50 to 30; Calgary 30.25 to 30.90.
