Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - December 3, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD - FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1971 Ecology: The Silent Bomb In the near future a public official will be able to feed into a computer the latest proposals for a new highway or land fill, and within seconds see on his office console the effects of such a plan on the entire socio - economic and ecological structure of the region. This planning device may become one of the important instruments in saving our environment from constant damage. Such concepts are investigated on Ecology: The Silent Bomb on CTV's documentary series, Here Come The Seventies, Thursday, December 9 at 9:30 p.m. At the University of British Columbia, a team of biologists, under the guidance of Professor Ian Efford, is engaged in a long range program of very accurately measuring the effects of pollution on one small lake. Using the data provided by its precise investigations, Profes- sor Efford's group will build a.| simulation model on a computer. With this type of computer program scientists will be able to predict what is going to happen in other bodies of water. The program also examines our societies' future energy requirements and interviews plasma physicist John Holdren who, along with many others, hopes to develop means of harnessing the thermo - nuclear fusion reaction - the peaceful use of the hydrogen bomb.
