Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - December 2, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta Similarities seen in Toronto, Tokyo air crashes nwinnri icl. Cantaitt Peter Hamilton, aboard the CP Air jet. 1 ,1970 THE LETHDRIDOC HERAIU Accused in Pope death plot TORONTO (CP) A tcdoral ah' accident investigator said today there were similarities between tlie 1DGG crash ol a CP Air jet in Tokyo Bay and the July 5 air disaster here that killed all 109 persons aboard an Air Canada jetliner. William Howes, who was in- volved in investigation of both crashes, told a federal inquiry 14-year-old 30th fatality EDMONTON (CP) Ber- linds Prantoer, 14, of Edmon- ton died in hospital of injuries she received when struck by a city bus Monday. The fatality was Edmonton's 30th of the year in traffic. into the Air Canada crash that both aircraft went down during final landing approaches. The CP Air jet smashed into a sea wall when it came in too low at Tokyo International Air- povt March 4, 1800, killing 64 persons. Mr. Howes said he could not rule out the possibility that the CP Air DC-II jet experienced trouble with its ground spoiler braking system. Th6 Air Canada DC-8-63 dropped onto a Toronto Interna- tional Airport runway from a height of 60 feet because of pre- mature deployment of the ground spoiler system. It lost an engine on impact, attempted to circle Uie airport for another landing approach and crashed three minutes later. The ground spoilers are pan- els of steel.along the wings of DC-Ss (hat rise at nn angle to .lie wing surfaces on landing to steady and slow the aircraft. DEPLOYED BY HANI) In Uie case of Air Canada Flight 021, the inquiry was told Gangster-movie style robbery LONDON (AP) Three rob- bers dressed in wide-brimmed felt hats and overcoats in gang- land-movie style and armed with a sawed-off shotgun and iron clubs held up a bank ui London's busy financial district Monday. The raiders wounded three men, one of them criti- cally, and escaped with in cash, bank officials said. that the ground were deployed manually from the cockpit by First Officer Donald Rowland while the plane was still 60 feet above the runway, instead of on the. ground. Mr, Howes, hca-i of the trans- port department's investigation of the Air Canada disaster, slid he was involved in preliminary investigation of the CP Air crash. The final report on the Tokyo crash blamed the acci- dent on pilot error. However, Mr. Howes said the possibility of spoiler malfunc- tion at Tokyo "could not be dis- counted completely." The CP Air jet dropped from feet, clipped some landing approach lights with its engine pods, and smashed into a sea wall short of the airport. The inquiry was told earlier that Uie pilot of the Air Canada jet, Captain Peler was convinced that the Tokyo crash was caused by mechani- cal malfunction of the spoilers that caused them to deploy while the aircraft was still at a considerable altitude. I This caused Captain Hamilton to order First'Officer Rowland to arm the spoilers while the elongated DC-8, bound for Los Angeles from Montreal with a short stop here, was "on the before touchdown. They would deploy automati- cally when the wheels touched the runway. The Air Canada manual says the spoilers must be armed for automatic deployment at feet. Mr. Howes said the exact cause of the Tokyo crash "may never be known." He said there was no flight data recorder aboard the CP Air jet. There was one on the Air Canada DC- 8. "We like to think (he pilots lave confidence in our said Mr. Howes. "It they haven't got it, we're wasting our time." Mr, Howes noted that Captain Hamilton's opinion of tho ground spoiler system also was influenced by a spoiler system malfunction reported subse- quent to the Tokyo crash by Scandinavian Airlines Systems. In that case, erratic electronic impulses caused the spoilers to deploy fully on one of its jets it the air shortly after they had been armed for automatic de- ployment on landing. DAMAGE ART In Italy, termites have eaten Uie canvas and frames from valuable art. MANILA (AP) A Bolivian painter was formally accused in court today of the attempted murder of Pope Paul. If the court agrees with a gov- ernment psychiatrist that the man Ls mentally ill, he could be confined at the National Mental Hospital here or deported as an undesirable alien. Prosecutor Gregorio Pineda filed the charge against Benja- min Mendoza y Amor, 35, a sur- realist painter from La Paz. Pineda said it is up to the court in Pasay to rule on the mental condition of Mendoza when he tried to attack the Pope with a knife at the Manila airport Friday. Judge Pedro Bautista set ar raignment for Friday morning. A psychiatrist said Monday Mendoza was ill with systema- tized paranoia, rare form of insanity. He recommended con- finement in a mental hospital. Mendoza told police he wanted to kill Tope Paul to save man- kind. 4WAYSYOUCAH BEAT TENSION How many times liave you ex- perienced sudden chest pains nausea... a churning stom- ach trembling nervous- ness?
