BARRETT PEARS Mail workers going after hefty raise OTTAWA (CP) Inside postal workers will be looking tor hefty wage increases in their next contract talks, with estimates of their pay raise demands over two years rang- ing up to 50 per cent Representatives from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers have been meeting this week to for- mulate their contract proposals Wages and job security are emerging as prime issues in talks that be- gin soon with government ne- gotiators The current contract, which also embraces letter carriers, ends Dec 31 After the April national postal strike, mediator Eric Taylor proposed the parties get together in September to open negotiations Joe Davidson, national president of the postal workers, said at a news conference Thursday that while union wage proposals have not been finally settled the demands will be "substan- tial Mr Davidson said since ratification of the existing agreement in February, 1973 purchasing power of the employees' wages has declin- ed 20 per cent The union also said its ne- gotiators will look for "a sub- stantial wage increase that would put the workers' buying power ahead of past and future cost-of-hving increases At the current inflation rate of 11 3 per cent over 12 months, that would mean the union would ask for another 22 5 per cent for the next two vears on top of the decline in purchasing power Since February, 1973, the government has given the postal workers a cost-of- livmg bonus, which is tacked on to hourly wages, but union officials have said it is not enough Present maximum hourly wage for most postal clerks is 59 Letter carriers receive 44 an hour The union has pledged to continue a "boycott the postal code campaign until the automation issue is settled A dispute over the program and the payment of lower wages to coding desk operators was behind the strike in April.
