Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - August 29, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta In some areas in Ulster... the IRA rules IRA hijack van beginnings of a booby By JONATHAN HARSCH Christian Science Monitor Northern Ireland Four masked men blocked the road and left us no choice. We pulled realizing that in Northern Ireland's Crossmaglen the illegal Irish Republican Army rules. We'd driven south from Bel- passing through rings of British Army check points and heavily armored through the well-fortified towns of Arm- and Newtownhamillon. But here at the Cullyhanna fork between Newtownhamilton and it was IRA men who manned the check point. on a sunny sum- mer the IRA was in full control. My wife took photographs and I watched as the six-man IRA Active Service Unit hi- jacked a delivery van. Without wasting they double- checked made sure the van had enough gas for the op- and were off. The six now equipped with two two 100-pound and various automatic weapons headed north toward Newtownhamilton. According to later police and military re- their first stop was to shoot up the home of a British military reservist. Then the vans weie abandoned by the one with a flat tire. The security forces were no- tified of the hijacking and found the two vans. When two police constables approached the two 100-pound placed behind the walls on eith- er side of the narrow country were detonated. Miracu- the policemen' were only shocked and bruised. The hijacking was at 5 the shooting at the bomb at- tack at 7.30. Throughout this the IRA squad moved freely around the area. The only sign of British Army was a helicoptcf high overhead a p p a r e n tly searching for the bright yellow stolen van. Another three miles Just yards beyond the we met the crouching soldiers and sleek armored cars of the Irish Army. As this reporter and photog- rapher zigzagged back and forth over the border in the Crossmaglen at each crossing we found a group of Southern Army or both just south of the border. In no case was a British soldier or northern police-man visible. A British spokesman later ex- plained the absence of British a hard Republi- can area down there.
