Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - August 26, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta Wednesday, Auguil 1970 THI UTHMIDGI HEKALD 27 Scare Away Ducks During Harvest ST. ALBERT (CP) Walter Frank stood in his barley field the other day at dusk watch- ing as a black horde of quack- ing grain eaters bore down on his crop. But this night would be dif- ferent, he said. It was the first night due to the "scare" permit he had just received from the Alberta lands and forest department- thai he would be 'able to pro- tect his crop. Just as the thousands of hun- gry ducks approached the crop, two of the farmer's friends fired two volleys from, their 12-gauge pump guns. The ducks circled twice and de- cided to look for other golden pastures without animate scarecrows. All of them left. The men did not shoot to kill. Mr. Frank's farm, about 10 miles north of Edmonton, is one of hundreds that have asked for and received permission to scare away the ducks during the harvest season. But, officials say, once the ducks are in the area it is doubtful whether the main ob- jective, saying the crops, is ever completely accomplished. As the sun sets, the hungry ducks become increasingly bold and finally some land al- most at the feet of the human scarecrows who are firing into the air. 'It is quite likely the biggest service done is to the ducks, said Vic Sigurdson, a fish and wildlife officer. "If it weren't for this little bit of pro-season shooting, activity on opening day would be a slaughter of hungry ducks at close range." In some areas, particularly the Peace River country north- west of Edmonton, lure crops have been set up to attract the ducks and feed them and, farmers hope, keep them from their own crops. Under the lure crop system, the government rents selected fields from farmers, swaths the crops and leaves them strewn in the fields along the decoys. eye- glasses come equipped with flashlight on each side of the frame so wearer needn't grope in the dark. Farm Products Prices Higher OTTAWA (CP) Farm prod- uct prices rose fractionally in June but remained four per cent below prices prevailing a year earlier, the Dominion Bureau of Statistics reported today. The bureau's index of farm prices of agricultural products, based on 1963 prices equalling 100, was 115.6 in June, com- pared with 115.3 in May and 120.3 in June last year. Prices were lower for live- stock and eggs, but higher for potatoes, the bureau said. The index in June was higher than the May index in all prov- inces but Saskatchewan, where it declined to 90.4 from 90.6. In Saskatchewan, there are six main lure crop areas. Ber- nie Forbes, director of the pro- vincial wildlife branch, said Tuesday "we expect to initiate some more next year." He said in an interview the scheme has been working well. "If the weatherman continues to co-operate, our experience this year with spoiled crops shouldn't be too bad." Pregnant Woman Jailed SASKATOON (CP) A 21- year-old woman who is eight months pregnant was sen- tenced here to two years less a day in prison for her part in a bank robbery. Donna Wendt had pleaded guilty to the robbery of a Sas- katoon branch of ttie Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce on Aug. 10. Judge R. H. King said he was satisfied that the robbery was premeditated and cold-blooded and that Miss Wendt knew what she was doing. This 'Rabbit? Valued At LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Red-Eye looks like an over- grown white rasbit, but this "rabbit" is worth Red-Eye is an albino baby WE.Uaroo, born in June at the Louisville Zoological Gardens to Matilda, a normal, char- coal-grey wallaroo valued at about Dr. Ivo Poglayne, the zoo director here, discovered soon after Matilda arrived here that she was pregnant, ena- bling the zoo to get two walla- roos for the price of one. A wallaroo is a middle-sized kangaroo, and the zoo now has four of males, including Red-Eye, and .two females. Matilda came here frcvi Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney, Australia.
