The WINNIPEG (CP) Ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, who defected from the Soviet Union in Toronto June 29, will perform with the Royal Win- nipeg Ballet this fall. The 26-year-old star, who was granted political asylum in Canada shortly after his surprise defection, currently is performing in the United States. As well as marking his first concerts with a Canadian ballet, Baryshnikov's six per- formances with the Royal Winnipeg will be the premiere of a partnership with American Gelsey Kirkland. Miss Kirkland, 21, has starred with the New York City Ballet and other top American troupes. Royal Winnipeg general manager Jim Cameron said the pair will appear in six per- formances of the Pas De Deux from Don Quixote beginning October 2. "Not since Rudolph Nureyev met Margot Fonteyn in London during the early six- Herman songs on Broadway By DICK KLEINER HOLLYWOOD (NBA) For the first time since "Kismet" opened, a major Broadway musical is trying out here. Called "Mack and it shapes up as a winner. It should. It's from the same team that created "Hello Jerry Herman wrote the songs Robert Preston and Bemadette Peters sing and I'm happy to report that these are songs you whistle coming out of the theater. "I believe in Herman says. "For some strange reason, musicals are veering away from that. Songs are disappearing. I think peo- ple are starved for musicals with melodic songs." "Mack and Mabel" deals with early Hollywood Mack Sennett and Mabel Normand so it was a curiosity among the Hollywood set. But it stands on its own two acts nobly. Herman says that he was offered three movie sales before it opened but he turned them down. Now that the reviews are in generally favorable and the ticket sales are booming, he's glad he did. Now, he says, "our position is stronger I asked him if he'd seen the movie version of another musical he wrote. He just laughed. "In transferring a musical from stage to he said, when he had recovered from his fit of laughing, "the original concept of the show must be totally reconceived. Like Bob Fosse did with 'Cabaret.' "Mack and Mabel' will not be done as a movie unless I have a hand in the new concept." Elizabeth Taylor and Gary Grant costarring in a movie? Probably not, but you never know. Gwen Davis has a best sell- ing novel out now, a very readable book called "The Motherland." She says that Grant keeps calling her to talk about the book. And, she says, Elizabeth Taylor has been reported as saying she'd like to play Evelyn, the leading female character Miss Davis thinks she'd like to see Paul Newman and George Segal as the Sterne brothers, her leading men. There isn't a definite movie sale yet but it should sell. It is possible that it could make one of those big TV movies, a la "QB VII." Most people think of Gwen Davis as the writer of sexy novels, because of her big sexy hit, "The Pretenders." But that label annoys her GERMAN CANADIAN CLUB REGULAR DANCE Sat., Aug. 24th 9 p.m. Music by "Fiorino" Members and Invited Guests Only IMPORTANT NOTICE To all parents who would like to enroll their children in German School, come to the Club Hall Sunday, Auguat 25th at 8 p.m. [ELKS PUBLIC BINGO 1251 3rd AVENUE SOUTH EVERY THURSDAY 8 p.m. 16 GAMES NEW BLACKOUT Played Till Won (No Number Limit) IF WON ON A BLUE BONUS CARD (No Limit Purchased) PAYS DOUBLE No one under 16 years allowed ELKS and INVITED GUESTS ONLY DOWNSTAIRS WEEKEND ENTERTAINMENT SATURDAY, AUGUST "ALBERTA RANCH BOYS" Gates Open COMPLETE SHOW AT 9 P.M.
