Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - August 21, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Wednesday, 21, 1974 LETHBRIDQE HERALD Congratulations First Lady Betty Ford and President Ford congratulate Nelson A. Rockefeller after Ford named him as his choice for vice-president at the White House Tuesday. At left is Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Rockefeller's home free except for bank accounts WASHINGTON (AP) Nelson Rockefeller's nomination to be vice- president of the United States was greeted here as though he barely had an enemy in the political world, but a lot of people are eager to rummage through his bank accounts. The initial reaction pointed to an easy slide through the confirmation process, first in the House of Representatives judiciary and Senate rules and administration committees, then the full Congressional bodies. "This is an outstanding choice." said Senator Robert Griffin of Michigan, one of four Republicans on the rules committee. "I think that (President) Ford and Rockefeller will be a formidable said Senator James Allen of Alabama, one of the five Democrats Allen also said: "I think he should start work immediately on his financial statement I feel that the committee is going to want to know a full disclosure of all of his financial interests and assets...." Chairman Howard Cannon (Dem. Nev.) said his Senate rules committee will be just as thorough in its examination of Rockefeller as it was of Ford when it passed on his confirmation as vice- president last year. He said he assumes Rockefeller, former New York governor, a member of one of the country's wealthiest families, will supply his tax returns, just as Ford did. Rockefeller's liberal record was mentioned by some con- gressmen. But House Republi- can Leader John Rhodes of Arizona said: "I can't believe conservative Republicans feel broadening the base of the party is a bad they want to keep on losing and keep on being a minority." Besides, Rhodes said, on fi- nancial matters Rockefeller is a conservative. Senate Democratic Whip Robert Byrd of West Virginia, a member of the Senate rules and administration committee, called Rocke- feller his top choice and "an excellent choice." Senate Republican Leader Hugh Scott of Pennsylvania said after meeting with Byrd that he hopes the nomination can be approved within 35 to 40 days. Alphabet bomber claim discounted LOS ANGELES (AP) Fire Chief Raymond Hill says the sun probably heated a truckload of chemicals to the point where they caused a warehouse explosion that the so-called alphabet bomber has claimed credit for starting. Hill said investigators are satisfied that the huge explosion Saturday was accidental. He told city council Monday that several thousand pounds of liquid organic peroxides were in a truck that had been parked at the site IVz days. The sun probably started a chemical reaction that accelerated once it began. He added he does not believe any laws or regulations have been violated in connection with the explosion But he said the city should have more power to enforce regulations governing movement and storage of un- stable materials. The state now regulates enforcement in the area, he said. A GOOD PLACE TO SPEND THE HOUDAY WEEKEND. On a long weekend a lot of drivers are so anxious to get out to those country breezes that they throw all caution to the wind. Because they're less cautious, it may pay for you to be a little ITK cautious. By driving a Volvo, for instance. The Volvo body is so strong we've stacked seven Volvos on top of one another without crushing the one on the bottom. What gives Volvo this strength are the six steel pillars surrounding the passenger compartment and the thousands of spot welds holding the body together. The trunk and engine compartments are designed differently. They crumple on impact at a pre-measured rate to absorb a collision it reaches the passenger compart On t s -s, steel anti-intrusion bars protect th-, angers from lateral impact. And in frcv .md back, hydraulic shock absorbers n the bumpers absorb low- speed .ons. B... v'olvo doesn't just protect you from "the other guy.M It can keep you from becoming "the other guy." Disc brakes are designed to resist fading, even after repeated panic stops. So Volvo has disc brakes on all four wheels. And Volvo doesn't stop there. It has a braking system with two independent sets of three-wheel disc brakes. If one set fails, the other still gives you about 80% of your braking power. Of course, driver fatigue can be just as dangerous as mechanical failure. So Volvo comes with bucket seats that let you concentrate on the road instead of the pain in your back. The seat-backs are infinitely adjustable with a special adjustment that allows them to be made firmer or softer. And since you really can't concentrate on what's ahead of you when you're worried about what's behind you, Volvo has a rear window defroster. As well as rear door locks that children can't open from inside. So when making plans for a long weekend, maybe you should plan on buying a Volvo. There's nothing like being prepared for the holidays. vouvo SHORT STOP AUTO SERVICE 538 6th St. S., Lethbridge Phone 328-6586 PHARMACY Shop with Confidence Cosmetic SUNBEAM MIST STYLER DRYER Natural Wonder Super-Action Cleansers by Revlon Super Skin.
